FS Only - Rare Lakland Skyline Jerry Scheff 4 - Shoreline Gold/Rosewood

Sign in to disble this ad
SOLD

For sale for $850 shipped lower 48-states in original Lakland Skyline hard shell case.
Will consider shipping international at buyers cost. PM me for details
Not interested in trades at this time. Trade offers will be ignored.

It's pretty hard to find a Skyline Jerry Scheff in general, and to find a Shoreline Gold one, is even harder.
I picked this beauty up in April from fellow TB'er Rumblefisher (original thread here: LAKLAND SKYLINE SCHEFF...AWESOME) and I love it.
Bass plays great, and is in very good shape for a 2005 model.
It's a very unique bass, which is what attracted me in the first place. It looks cool with the Armstrong lipstick pickup covers (which have a few scratches on them, and which are about the only flaws in this otherwise pristine bass), and gets lots of compliments whenever I bring her on stage.

But basses in my house have to be played to be kept, and this one's the least played.

Weight is a little under 9 lbs. which is about average for Skyline 4-strings.
Currently strung with well broken in TI flats, makes for very comfortable play.
This is an active bass with a passive bypass/push pull.
Can be pretty tame if you want, but nice and growly and burpy if you want that too.
Case is well worn, but everything functions properly.

On to some pics:

A beauty like this and at such a fair price is certainly worthy of a bump!

If anyone is sitting on the fence, don't hesitate to move quickly as the Lakland Jerry Scheff is the ONLY bass I have ever bought twice (and my new one is on the way) because I missed the first one I stupidly sold so much (and so did my bandmates).

How would you describe these basses tonally? What are they similar to?

Check out the link provided in the OP. It contains a lengthy analysis by Ian Allison, awesome bass player and TBer.

This was previously my bass. Great one, just needed the cash for bills. The tone is very distinct. The neck pickup can get very bassy, and does P tone quite well. The bridge pickup gets quite snarly. Because they are underwound pickups, they remain quite clear and articulate. There is a massive range of tone, all with a certain flavor unique to the Scheff models. Have a listen:

Thanks Rumblefisher. The pickups and the placement make for a unique sounding jazz-style bass. AS fisher said, wide variation between neck and bridge pup. bridge pickup on active really cuts through a mix, reminiscent, but not exactly the same tonewise, as a stingray.

No problem.

Actually my *favorite* thing about this bass was that, with flats and the neck pickup solo'ed, it sounded exactly like a hollowbody.

Tough to believe that a bass that can produce THAT tone can also mimic some of the all time classics as well.

These are scarce and I've gotten a few messages post sale about how to find one. Well, here's one so get after it TB! Not a shabby price either, considering buying a new Skyline can range from $1000-$1500. This, as mentioned already, is a discontinued model to boot!

The other feature of these unique basses is the addition of the dual Armstrong Chrome Lipstick Tube pickups... For anyone still on the fence as TheLarch put it, I agree they are a bit on the wild side. However, once you get it home, you notice that chrome fits right in with the other chrome hardware and looks very clean.

More importantly, the unique tones produced by these pickups are - what else can I say - Unique!

I've owned as many three of these Jerry Sheff basses at the same time and still have two in the stable that I can't imagine getting rid of.
