FS ONLY: Rob Allen Deep 4 Lined Fretless - The 1st One Rob Made & Shipped (Pic Heavy)

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello everyone.

Up for sale (no trades - don't PM me with them or post them here as I'll ignore them) is the very first Deep 4 bass that Rob Allen made and shipped. It has been with me since day one. Since I just got my new Deep 4, I really don't need two. They have different voices, but the new one will do the job for me.

It uses a single piezo pickup in the bridge. It's a wonderful instrument I've used on gigs and in the studio. It sounds and plays great. I've never had a complaint from anyone.

The D4 is a 34" scale bass. In one post on one of the Rob Allen threads I mistakenly said 35".

The top is Koa, the neck is walnut with a lined ebony (I believe macassar) fretless fingerboard. You can see all of Rob's woodwork in the pictures. It is strung with the bottom four strings of the Rotosound RS885D set (so .75 - .135). The neck is actually reinforced to handle it - Rob designed it that way. You can put on whatever strings you want, of course.

It comes with its original hardshell Rob Allen case specifically made for the Deep 4.

It does have a few dings and such due to use - this was never going to sit on my wall at home or just in the case. I have done my best to capture the dings and such in the pictures and describe them. I am being VERY nitpicky because to someone watching you play, they'll never notice.

Deep 4s don't come up for sale often here, and you can own a bit of "history" (so-to-speak). Having received a new Deep 4, Rob's made a few tweaks to the design (for example, the bridge is slightly different), and for all I know, the electronics are a bit different as well. I'll miss it, but it's time to get this one to a new home.

I have posted soundclips later in this thread, so scroll down to hear it.

If you have any questions not covered in this post, feel free to PM me or leave a message in this thread.

Sell Price: $2750 US dollars including shipping in the USA. New with all of these options you'd be looking at well over $4000 and probably around $4500 - 5000.

I'm not desperate for cash, and this isn't a fire sale, so please, don't lowball me with an offer.

I will sell internationally, so inquire. The price would not include shipping outside the USA. The dimensions of the bass + case are too big to ship via the USPS - it would have to go UPS or FedEx. You would be responsible for any duties/tax/VAT that your country would impose. So let me know where you are and I will get shipping estimates and you can look into any duties/tax/VAT. I will not underinsure the bass when sent. That is a recipe for disaster.

Payment Terms: PayPal preferred - the personal option, please. I have 100% positive feedback here, on eBay, and on head-fi, so I take selling seriously and never misrepresent an item (hence me describing all the cosmetic things).

I would consider a money order if it was a US Postal one or an international money order drawn in US dollars, but that will take time and delay the transaction.

As soon as I get payment, I will confirm your address and get it out in a day or two. I will be going away for work and vacation over the next few weeks, but we'll work it out.

I ship UPS or can do FedEx Ground if you want. I've never had an issue. I always e-mail tracking numbers so you can see its progress.

If you're local to the Boston area, I'd take cash as well, and we can arrange to meet as well.

Tortoise Binding Detail

Here's a ding on the left side of the heel.

Here are some dings on right side of the heel

Hard to see, but at the 5th fret some of the top layer of ebony has scratched off a slight bit.

Easier to see is this slight ding on the back of the neck

Towards the heel of the neck there is a hairline scratch in the outer coating of the neck which is nearly impossible to get on camera. You won't notice it but I'm being really anal.

Right on the bottom of the bass (which would face down towards the floor when you play) is a small ding

From me playing the bass, all along the upper part of the koa top there are light scratches in the wood that you would only notice if looking up close. I tried to capture it here as best as possible. Like I said, I actually played the bass.

Finally, there are a few assorted dings and such on the back of the body.

Gorgeous. I've been wanting a Deep 4 since I first played one a few months ago. Alas, no cash. Good luck on the sale!

absolutely stunning basses, I thought it was the same one I reviewed for BMM, but the one I checked out had a maple neck, this one appears to be Walnut (which IIRC Rob's preferred neck wood)

Couldn't be the same one since this one was Rob's first, and pre-dates your review. I've had this close to 10 years now. Nice review, but if you mean by "newest branches" it's a nearly 10 year old production bass, sure

My new D4 has a maple neck with an ebony unlined fretboard.

It's an ebony fretboard - that's what I meant and thought it was obvious in the pics. I'll modify the original text.

I think that neck is koa, not walnut. Rob used to make fancy 5 piece necks from figured koa and brazilian rosewood.

You may possibly be right. I haven't seen the documentation Rob sent me in years. Either way, it's a stunningly crafted neck.

Beautiful bass. I need an "upright tone" to add to my arsenal. Unfortunately.....

Not off the block, but if you want it, PM me. Going on vacation and can send it out tomorrow if you pay via PayPal. If you PM me while I'm on vacation, I'm not ignoring you. Won't be checking online much.

If you're curious about how this bass sounds, here's a post where I uploaded a live clip I recorded.

Here's another clip in the studio (obviously recorded differently)

We talk about the studio recording more starting here.

I also verified with Rob the scale length is 34".
