FS: Peavey TL5 5 String (First Run)

Sign in to disble this ad
For sale is my Peavey TL5 5 string bass. This is the first run of the model which was release in 1986, featuring the same Magnum Ferrite pickups and 3-band EQ system as on the Peavey Dynabass. This bass was made famous in the late 80's and early 90's by John B. Williams from the Arsenio Hall Show band. Man he could play!

This bass is an absolute gem and one of the best values around. It is a botique bass in discontinued stock bass' clothing. A relic of the amazing quality you got once upon of time when basses could be manufactured profitably in America.

Among the TL5's many feautures usually only found on basses costing $2K and up:

Eastern flame maple body and neck
Ebony fingerboard with 15" radius
2 internally active (Hum-canceling) pickups
On-board active EQ with rotary mid shift/boost cut
9-volt powered low impedance output
Gold finished hardware
Premium die-cast machine heads
Genuine mother of pearl oval inlays
Schaller Roller Bridge for variable/ customized string spacing

The bass also featured a contoured body back which approximates the radius of the neck and is very comfortable over the belly.

Finish on this bass is Plum stain. You can see the maple flame in some pictures below though lighting issues in my apartment were a little challengning last night. The wood is much more impressive in person.

Overall this bass is in very clean condition. Just some very light scrathcing and the head stock and a slight area of finish chip that does not expose the bear wood as the bass is stained.

And of course the tone is amazing.

The only issue with the bass is that it is missing the battery box cover. I called Peavey and they do not have any replacements but this is an easy fix with some tracing paper, a dremol tool and a small amount of pickguard material as the box is only about 1.5" square. The missing cover does not affect playabiliy however, as the battery fits snugly inside the compartment.

I removed the the electronics cavity plate to show the original circuitboard in a couple of pics.

I am asking $475 shipped in a gig bag to the CONUS, or your best offer. I am eager to unload this and a couple of other basses to finance a pending bass purchase so please feel free to make a best offer if you don't think my ask is fair.

Thanks so much and please feel free ot PM with questions. Pics below;

Bump for a really cool bass. I remember this model very fondly. Great sound from those electronics...truly a unique instrument. Lucky is that cat (ha!) who lands this one.

That darned cat!

I think the cat likes the bass, would you be forgiven if you sold it? I don't think so.

Nice pun. Which reminds me that one of the major features of this bass was the neck and truss rod which was supposed to be much better at straightening and bowing a neck than any traditional neck rod.

You can read about the patent listed on the headstock here:

http://www.wikipatents.com/4237944.html

I am not sure if Peavey still uses this design. It is a really cool idea so I would hope that they do!

Hmm, you may have a point. If I sell that bass he's gonna jump on my bed at night and knead my neck while I lay asleep.

Uh oh. Maybe this sale is a bad idea

What I wanna know is, what the heck kind of door knob is that pictured with the bass? I went to Home Depot's website and searched "door knob" and 542 results yielded nothing remotely similar.....

Good question!

It is a child=proof door know cover. You place it around the door knob and have to open up a wide grip and squeeze hard with equal pressure on both sides of your grip to "catch" the door knob inside in order to open the door.

The idea is that you put these on kitchens, bathrooms, and any other room you don't want toddlers running in to. Works like a charm. We have these on kitchen, baths, closets. Good stuff.

Check out onestepahead.com. They have these if not ones that are very similar.

Seems like this question is unpopular around here lately, but...

Would you happen to have an approximate weight on the bass? Thanks!

Two problems with that question:

1) The bass is in my office and I don't have a scale in my office.

2) I just got back from the holidays and i don't want to get on a scale

Seriously, lemme see how i can weight it. It is surprisingly light, though you might not expect that. The body is pretty thin and kinda has to be for the countouring I would imagine. Feels like my SUB which is about 10-10.5lbs. but I could be off.

I really dig these and would have picked one up had it not been for me finding a Peavey GV. How are the pups on this? With the GV I have experience with the VFLs, but how do these sound? Are they cool?

These are the old school Peavey Magnum Ferrite pickups and they are dope! Very warm. Great output.
