FS: Rare 1983 Passive G&L El Toro

Sign in to disble this ad
1983 El Toro in excellent condition. All original and unmodified. Some dings on the headstock (as pictured) and a small shallow one on the neck that I never noticed.

Original factory hardshell case, all latches and hinges present and functional. I believe the body is ash. Tobacco sunburst with matching headstock.

Bass weight is 9lb 10oz, with case item is around 25 lbs.

Neck profile reminiscent of a Jazz. Low action. All pickups/controls/switches working. Kicks like a Bull.

$1050 950 $ 900 shipped, professionally packed and insured from Canada.

What you've all been waiting for.....

To my highly unprofessional eye, the body wood actually looks like mahogany. Could it be the case? Cannot afford this beauty ATM, just curious.

Passive?....there's no battery compartment.

Any idea what the G&L neck number is?

It could be. I'll admit I'm not an expert on wood and the guy I bought it from thought it was mahogany as well, so I could have that wrong.

I'll measure the nut and will try to figure out what neck number it is, but it feels a hair bigger than most jazz necks to me, but not a P neck.

It is passive. I gather G&L only made these for approx six months and are pretty rare.

Don't know if G&L number-sized necks back then. The ones I've held are all variations on a theme: between 1-5/8 and 1-11/16 width, somewhat shallow front to back. They all feel great, especially the 1-5/8 shape which I find fantastic (and I'm generally a narrow-nut kinda guy). Bump from a fellow Bull owner ('89).

Surprised it is still available.
Maybe it will sell quicker if you post some sound clips (I for example cannot find any on Youtube).

How is he truss rod? Still has play? Any weirdness with the neck or is it pretty straight? Do you know what the date stamps are?

Let me see what i can do. I might have to off something to swing this. Thats a fine looking bass. Do you think its lacking something without the active mode?

Oh and what are the switches for? I read its a 3 way pickup and a 3 way series parallel bass boost where the boost defeats the pup selector.

No issues with either the neck or the truss rod. The guys in my band we're shocked when they found out t was passive, so its definitely not missing anything.

For the switches the black toggle switch by the Volume selects pickups and the red two-position toggle allows standard pickup switching in one position, and bypasses the pickup switch and boosts both pickups in the other.
