FS: Rare Fenix Fretless Jazz by Young Chang - Fender Lawsuit (Really)! PRICE DROP!

Sign in to disble this ad
PRICE DROPPED TO $300 or best.

Normally this would go straight to ebay where my oddball basses get a little more love when I need to move them. But since I am travelling soon, I thought I would first list this here for those TB-ers who are affectionate towards Fender style axes...

So this is a Fenix Bass made in Korea in the early 90's by piano maker Young Chang. There is a little bit of information about these on the web for those of you who are curious, but basically this was Young Chang's Fender-Killer. A jazz bass with high quality woods and great build quality. A slightly more heavy duty bridge and sealed EMG style jazz pickups. Players loved these for the short time that they were available.

The original run of these basses were pretty much dead on Fender copies so Fender threatened a lawsuit over the headstock and Young Chang in response changed the headstock to the sculpted design you see in the pics. It is actually quite a stunning look which gives this bass a nice custom like touch but overall this screams of Fender vintage jazz bass vibe.

This bass has a natural finish, alder body, maple neck and rosewood board. Lots of mwah and very comfortable to play. Sounds great.

Overall in excellent condition. Just a couple of small areas on the body as pictured where the finish is either cracked or checked but not noticeable unless you are looking for them. There are also darker markings on the neck behind the nut probably from a hanging hook but these might be the actual wood. See pics for detail.

Ask price for this is $375 $300 shipped with nice gig bag, which is a very fair price for a rare bird of this quality. If you have any questions or any potential trade bait to offer that is equally rare and cool, please PM me.

Thanks for looking, and enjoy the high res pics below...

Are you certain that's ash? It looks very *alder* to me. Regardless, a nice looking piece, w/an interesting story. 1 1/2" nut I presume?

Forgot to reply to the second part of your post-- it does have the Fender Jazz nut spacing indeed. Thanks again.

Happy new year bump! Folks, this is price dropped to $300 asking. I am ready to deal cash or trade. I am in the market for a semi hollow, a guitar of equal value(eg a mim telecaster) or even a powerful gk backline combo. Either way I bought 2 veer high end fretlesses this month so I need tom move this one ONI as much as I dig it. Thanks.

I totally dig that headstock.
I might have to steal the idea for my project bass.
Do you think I'd get a lawsuit threat from Young Chang?

Bump for you.

Sharp looking bass! Are there markers on the top side of the neck? What is that golden strip between the bridge pup and bridge?

Thanks!

Yes, there are dot markers on the top of the neck exactly where you would expect them on an unlined fretless.

The copper strip is a grounding strip, just as you would find on an older Fender bass. A lot of the imports had this feature back in the day both for function (i.e. to eliminate hum/buzz) and for style (i.e. to cop the look of an early 60's Jazz).

Thanks for your interest.

Bump. Played this bass last night with a band for the first time. It really sat like a J in the mix with tons of mwah and growl when I wanted to summon some up. Surely this little jem will make someone happy. Make me an offer, worst I can say is no. Seriously...
