is it not possible to add say, 10 actual frets and then add lines to the rest of that neck?

I went 15 years owning the same bass, then recently bought two in a one week span. I told my wife "it's really not bad if I buy two basses every 15 years". Went over smooth as butter, but now I can't buy another bass unitl 2020.
