FS: Steinberger XQ-5 - original TN model, w/barts

Sign in to disble this ad
This Steinberger XQ is in nice shape - the front is virtually perfect, but a few dings on the top and back. I think there is one very small ding on the front but it's impossible to photograph because of the shinyness of the body.

The neck is an original Steinberger neck and is perfectly straight (has just the right amount of relief). I spent a ton of time adjusting the action for various string tension and there is surprisingly a lot of adjustment in the bridge of these babies as well.

It has two bartolini humbuckers and a 9v Hazlabs preamp - two band (bass + treble) Eq, volume, and pickup blend.

Two sets of GHS Stainless double ball strings (25 bucks each, great greatstrings) included

Included is a hardshell case and a string adapter.

Price: 1200 + shipping

Summary of questions from last time around:
-Strings are 2.5" at bridge, 1.5" at the nut, 1.75" neck width
-Swamp ash body, not the maple
-SN TN15054
-Medium-low action, 1/8th" above 12th fret, 1/16th or less with 1st and 24th fret depressed
-No truss rod
-Frets are in solid playable shape
-Will take up to 200 bucks value in trade. Prime candidates include a VT bass pedal or a nice chorus pedal, or a high end comp pedal (Carl martin, demeter) possibly.

On Approval option
If you are gunshy about buying a used Steinberger, I am willing to sell for 1350 on approval, with up to 350 back from me toward any repairs found to be necessary by Peekamoose guitars. All shipping is on your dime however, that means to Peekamoose and to you.

Whatever it costs to have them go over it (I'd assume around 50-100 bucks or so) and set it up to your specs, I will cover as part of the cost (the 350 available for repairs).

PICS

The Bartolini and preamp mod is an aftermarket one, isn't it ?

According to Steinbergerworld.com:

Quote:
"The Q's are available in both a 4 string and wide 5 string version. All of the original v1's came stock with active EMG pickups and active or passive EQ. The later Nashville ones came with a variety of pickup configurations: EMG's, Bartolini's (P pickups in a humbucking housing just like the EMG-HB's on the 4's and 5 wide soapbars on the 5's), and Seymour Duncan Basslines. The EMG and Bartolini ones were matched to passive pots or HAZ Labs dual tone active electronic boards (tweaked for each pickup). OEM active electronics on the Basslines were provided directly by Seymour Duncan and often consist of a four knob setup of volume (w/ pull contour switch), balance, dual tone knobs and a midrange knob."

Vagabond is correct; this is the original XQ, not the Moses neck model. It has a Steinberger graphite neck.

The Bartolinis are original and it has a 9v Haz Labs preamp with bass/treble, blend, and volume.

Definitely sounds a LOT warmer than the EMG Steinbergers I have tried, and is capable of quite a lot of the same aggressiveness as well.

In the mid 90's Ned (at the request of Gibson) redesigned the Q. The body was changed (from maple) to swamp ash, slimmed quite a bit, and the heel tapered. The overall shape was retained but was thinned and curved to be much more rounded and refined.

XQ bass - Ned love of hard maple comes through again. v1's had it, then Gibson went to swamp ash for the Nashville v2's.

This makes this bass a weird combination of swamp ash body and V1 body shape and electronics.
Maybe a transitional instrument from V1 to V2 ?

Anyway bump for the 'berger!

This one is actually a V2, sorry for the confusion there. It's swamp ash with the V2 body - the V1 body is a big beefier. By original I meant as in a Steinberger-Gibson instrument, not a Musicyo (still steinberger/gibson, but new neck material and back to only EMGs).

I'm not sure but I think there were different sets of pickups on the Q5-2's and Q5-1's.

AFAIK, these pickups must be originals because EMG-40's on the other Q's were 1.5" wide rather than the 1.25" wide of these pups. I've also been under the pickups to put new foam under them and there looks to be no modification down there at all. Original body paint all through the cavity.

Note: I'll consider trade offers that include a good bit of cash, so something like a Peavey GV + ~700, an American fender 5'er + ~500, etc. Graphite or graphite reinforced only please. Quite picky about neck stability
