I took this in trade this summer when there were a glut of Sadowsky Metro 5s on the market and I couldn't get a good price for mine. Intended to sell it right away, but I couldn't resist playing it for awhile! Specs:
Black Limba Body (weighs around 10-11 lbs)
5A spalted top
33" Scale (don't worry, the low end is there and the B is tight)
Wenge/bubinga neck
Rosewood fret board, pickup covers, and ramp.
Inset straplocks (Dunlop)
Handcarved bone nut
Ebony knobs
Bart pickups and pre (3-band with 3-position mids)
All black hipshot hardware
I'm not positive on the spacing but it feels standard to me.
TKL hard case included (ramp is in the case with installation instructions) $1950 shipped in the CONUS
It's basically in as-new condition, and I can't emphasize enough that this is nicest 6-string I've ever played (and I've owned a few), and in fact it's the first sixer that felt "right" to me and didn't seem goofy and didn't make me think the high C string was a poorly-considered afterthought. It really is a very very special bass, and the price reflects the fact that it's hard to come by the "just right" six-string.
Trades? It's inevitable that they'll come up. OK, I like Sadowskys, I'd love a 24-fret five string or even a nice four string (Metro HPJ or whatever), so who knows. I'm looking for cash, of course, but if someone comes along with a NYC Sadowsky worth more than this I'd consider trading up with cash on my end. I'm not really interested in other sixers or boutique basses right now.
Thanks for looking!

With both pickups on and in humbucking mode, it sounds...round but focused? Focused but round? Woody but tight? With the neck pickup soloed, it sounds like a relaxed P-bass (less mid-range blare, more nuance), and in the upper register it sounds like, I don't know, Grant Green or Kenny Burrell's fat Gibson hollowbody. (This blows me away. I love it.) With both pickups, the upper register sounds more like John Patitucci's Yamaha but with much more character to the notes (I think his six string sound is on the bland side, which of course suits him because then he be very expressive with his hands, sort of on a blank canvas of sound). I'll be honest, with the bridge pickup soloed it's a bit too tight for my taste; fortunately, playing over the bridge with both pickups on gives you a best-of-both-worlds thing (the clarity and tightness of the Jaco sound but with more body to the notes).
I don't know if it's because of the shorter scale or what, but small differences in placement of the right hand yield large differences in tone. Which is something I find to be pretty cool. I'll get some clips up as soon as I can. |

Price is negotiable; plenty of wiggle-room for someone who will love and play it. |

Is spacing measured from the middle of the string to the middle of the string, or edge to edge? (I assume the former. I've never measured it on any bass, believe it or not.) |

Nut width seems to be 56mm total (somehow the neck seems comfortably narrow but the strings under the right hand seem comfortably wide--this contributes to the "rightness" of the bass). |

I've received some very nice trade offers, but I'm leaning away from that right now because of a complicated situation. (Just sold my beautiful Henry fretless, which was not for sale, to a student who needed it more than I did, so I've got the cash to have Andrew Henry build me this bass around a 27-fret Moses neck I've been sitting on for awhile, and he can use the cash to build three basses which Vic has agreed to review for BassGear magazine. It's about the community!) |
