- 67/68 Vox Phantom IV Teardrop bass in good condition with some dings in the finish
- Made in approx. 1967 or 68. Italian.
- Ebony fretboard, 3 piece flame-maple neck
- Recently setup, frets cleaned up and warped pickguard flattened out.
- All original hardware and bridge cover plate
- Installed new pickup selector switch, but kept old switch. Old switch was unreliable.
- Original case
- This is the model played by John Cale in the Velvet Underground
The one unusual thing that had to be done to the bass is that there was a small dip under the pickguard in the "top." The bass is actually hollow, but with rather thick top/sides and back. The result of the top sloping inwards was that the bridge, which mounts to it, would not sit flush on the top, which was obviously going to affect playability. My luthier, Kerry Char, used a bondo on the dip to create a level surface, sanded it flush to the top and then sprayed it to match the black. It's under the pickguard and he reports that if you pulled the guard it's barely noticeable and only on the bridge section of the top. There's a "before" pic below to illustrate how the construction looks.
The bass is now completely playable and sounds amazing. It's got a great neck and sounds amazing. It's just not something I need at the moment and I'd like to find something that'll get used around here more often.
Asking $1150 Paypal/ground shipped/insured.
Open to all manner of trades and/or cash. I like old Guilds (guitars and basses), tape echo's, recording equipment and long walks on the beach. Please feel free to offer this and that. Don't need any bass amps at the moment though...
FYI, one of these sold on eBay recently for about $1600+ or so, so I'm trying to price lower because of the unusual, but professional, repair.
Lastly, I'm relatively new on this forum, but I'm on TGP quite often and have bought and sold a lot of stuff. Feel free to also check out my eBay ID, "infiniteposse." If a buyer would like TGP references I'd be happy to provide them, as well. I just sold a Koll Super Glide Almighty to a very happy gentleman over there.
Please let me know if you would like any more info/pics.
Thanks!
