Tobias Growler 4 bass, natural body (swamp ash) bubinga/maple neck, beautifully figured fretboard. Pre-Gibson manufacture, made-in-USA. Bass is in outstanding condition with only slight wear marks from playing. Bartolini active system, original Tobias HSC, double truss rods, adjusting tools, all original paperwork including hangtag. This bass is a fantastic player, perfectly setup and all details are correct and solid. This is an asymmetrical neck, with a thicker profile on the bass side. Serious bass for serious players. Not interested in any trades other than a Nikon D90.

$800 shipped CONUS

More photos available on request.

Price drop: $700. Not going any lower; I'll keep it if it doesn't sell.

I'm pretty sure that this bass is not a pre-gibson. The new Gibson model that came out a few years ago has that fifth knob instead of two switches, and the pre-gibson models have a mother or pearl inlay for the logo.

see how it has the knobs. It's definitely a Gibson. Sorry man.

Correct. This is an early era Growler. Notice the two switches. I still like both though personally.

The Growler was a Gibson creation the quad pickup used in this bass was specced to Bartolini by a Gibson Tobias employee. I know the bass in the post is long sold but just in case it shows up in a search I'd like to also clarify that pearl inlays were done on even the Growler at the Gibson plant this was 96-97 and I still have some of the broken inlays because that was one of my jobs there.

Has this bass been sold yet? I have one of these and it is a real find. It was my primary instrument for some time until I made the switch to passive pickups. I have had several opportunities to sell and trade it but I just can't part with it. The neck is incredibly easy to play and it has great tonal variety. At one point I almost traded it at Sam Ash for a Rickenbacher. It's a boring story as to why I didn't go through with it, but they appraised the Tobias at $700 and they usually low ball. If there's anyone out there who's on the fence with this, pull the trigger.
