FS: Two (!) Wilkat Steinberger-style custom basses

OK guys, it pains me a bit to do this but I'm putting up for sale my two custom headless basses made for me by Bill Wilkat. If you're looking at this or have been around the Steinberger world group you're probably familiar with Bill's excellent work. I am the original owner of these, and yes that's my review on his site that's been there a while.

The details:
  • Constructed from all-new parts and materials (of course)
  • Custom ergonomically shaped black limba body with wenge center stripe
  • Fretted: Moses Graphite MB-144 neck with diamondwood fingerboard & abalone dot inlays
  • Fretless: Moses Graphite MB-244 neck with diamondwood fingerboard custom "side lines" where each fret would be on the side of the neck (see pictures link below)
  • Steinberger L-style headpiece
  • Genuine Steinberger v4 bridge with stainless inserts purchased from MusicYo (Gibson) when they were still selling OE parts
  • EMG HB active pickups directly mounted to the body
  • Sadowsky 9v onboard preamp with tone-control bypass capability and side-input jack
  • Copper shielded control cavities with wenge cover plate
  • Flush-mount (inlaid) Dunlop Straploks
  • Custom made Mooradian gig bags with dual shoulder straps and hanging hook

These basses have a unique woody tone that sits well in a mix and would be outstanding for a rock band, among other things. If you're looking for a dead-ringer XL2 tone these are not your instruments -- you should just go buy an XL2/A instead. But if you want the advantages of graphite-necked instruments (strength, stability, evenness of tone) with a great, warm & earthy tone these are for you!

Both of these basses are in great shape and have been kept primarily at home since I've had them. They really have been fantastic instruments to own and enjoy, but it is time for a change. Since they were conceived, designed and created together I would vastly prefer to find a good home for both of them with the same lucky person... although I will sell them individually if that doesn't work out after a while.

See eBay link for current listing.

Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions or need any more detailed pictures.

Lots of bandwidth-eating pictures here.

Bill really makes great instruments, and he's a wonderful fellow to work with too! He regularly sent me email & picture updates, and even took the time to (try to) explain the various ins-and-outs of US-Canada shipping, taxes, customs, etc.

BTW, price reduced (above!)

Those are 34" scale right? How heavy is the fretted one? What I would give to get one of those....

Yes, they are standard 34" scale although, like most headless instruments, they appear to be shorter since their overall length is only a small amount longer than just the strings.

According to my bathroom scale the fretted one weighs in at 9.2lbs, and I'd imagine the fretless one is almost exactly the same since they are made of similar materials. Balance is really great due to the utter lack of neck-dive... obviously.

PM me if you're interested, and I'll make you a great offer.

Thanks for the comments! This has been a crazy week so I keep forgetting to post that the basses are listed on eBay now since it's been a month++.

Someone could swoop in and get 'em both for about what I'm in each one for...
