FS: US G&L SB-2 (P/J style) -- LPB / rosewood, quarter-sawn neck

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought this bass new in '96. It was my main bass for years and is everything an SB-2 should be. But it hasn't gotten enough attention in the last several years and the bill collector is a-knockin'. So ...

Quick specs:

- Lake Placid Blue over alder
- Rosewood board on a quarter-sawn neck (rare for this model -- see note below)
- #8 neck (1.5" nut, 12" radius) with satin finish
- Weight is 8 lbs by my analog luggage scale
- Electronics are stock V/V
- Comes with certificate of authenticity & case candy (Allen wrenches, case keys, owners manual, hang tag)
- Will include a spare white pearl pickguard (Chandler brand, G&L OEM) previously used on an SB-1 (will fit this bass perfectly) -- used, but nice.

Full disclosure:

- Condition is excellent. This was my main player for several years, so it's got a few dings, but nothing through the finish. The largest battle wound is about the size of a dime and is on the bottom edge near the jack. Can't capture it in pics. There's also a small spot of chrome worn off the bridge volume knob. Other than that, she's a beaut.

- Several years ago the pickguard cracked at the input jack. I replaced it with an identical one from Chandler who is the OEM for G&L pickguards, so you'd never know it otherwise.

- In 2006, about a month before the warranty was up, I discovered the truss rod bullet was frozen. Took it to a luthier who had no luck with it either, so I sent it off to Chris Robosan at G&L and it was returned to me with a new quarter-sawn neck. Has Hipshot branded tuners, which the factory uses as stock on occasion in place of the G&L branded Schallers. There's a tiny ding about the size of a pencil point at about the 12th fret you can sort of see in the pic below. I honestly don't remember putting it there. Truss rod works great now, though I haven't had to adjust it since the neck was replaced. Rock solid. This is the older bi-cut neck design -- probably PLEK'd but I can't swear to it. Time frame is right though and the action is nice and low with no fret buzz whatsoever.

You get two serial numbers with this one: the original "B" number on the neck plate and a "CLF" number on the back of the headstock. I listed it in the G&L registry under the "B" number, but for some reason the webmaster there switched it to the other.

Will ship in what I was told is the OHSC, but I don't know that it is, because there's no G&L logo. Let's call it "original style" molded plastic. It has the obligatory broken foot, lots of stickers (I can remove the political ones if you want) and "Property of Fats" in silver Sharpie on the top edge. A little fussy to close, but the latches all work and it's solid.

No trades please. Looking for cash on this one -- $695 shipped and insured (CONUS). PayPal okay.

Now the pics! Those are reflections of a tree you see on the guard. Color looks a bit darker out of the natural light. Y'ask me, G&L does a gorgeous LPB.

D'oh! No matter how thorough I try to be, I always forget something.

It's the #8 neck (1.5" at the nut, 12" radius). Satin finish to the maple, so it's nice and fast. And because it was a warranty replacement and hasn't seen a lot of action since, it shows zero fret wear.

I'll update the OP to reflect this. Thanks for the catch!

Just remembered tonight that I have a spare white pearl pickguard I snagged off an SB-1 that will fit this bass as well. Appears to be from Chandler (OEM for G&L guards) because their stock number for the SB-1/SB-2 model is stamped on the back.

I will happily include this in the sale for no extra charge if the buyer is interested. I have no real use for it otherwise. This one show some signs of use, but is in generally good shape. New from Chandler it would set you back $69.

So that's a bonus. Always liked the look of a pearl guard on LPB, but never swapped this one on for some reason.

Bump for a price drop to $695 for my TB brothers and sisters (listed for more locally). For that price, you get it shipped and insured in the 48 with the spare pearl guard. Such a deal!

That's my bottom line price on this one, folks. The only way I'll go lower is if you come to me so I don't have to ship it. In that case, I'll do $675. This bass is nice enough that I'd take a 2nd job before I'd let it go for anything less.

SOLD! Taking a short hop to the great state of Ohio, home of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

Thanks, OMR! I hope this one treats you as well as it's treated me all these years.
