Ok, after getting and loving my Variax bass, I decided to see what it would take to put the electronics into a different body. Not wanting to really dig into the electronics box attached to the knobs and pickguard, I ended up essentially sticking the pickguard with electronics onto a routed-out Signature jazz body. It wasn't very difficult to transfer over the bridge and the jack; in fact, I now know that it'd be pretty easy to remove the "brain" from the pickguard and place it elsewhere, but I'm just not gonna have the time to do it.
So, I then slapped an All-Parts bound and blocked neck w/Fender logo, Hipshot tuners (plus a detuner) and found that it worked just fine.

As you'll see, it's not pretty. There's some overhang from the pickguard, it doesn't match the neck pocket, etc. It's powered from the included DI and stereo cable, but I left the 9v battery connection somewhat accessible for testing purposes. You'll also see that the bridge cover is over an empty route. Like I said, not pretty. But, it gets the job done.
Anyway, for those of you who like to build, it's essentially a great neck and tuners that come with modeling electronics. Looking for $500 shipped in original gig bag.
