Up for sale is a 70's style jazz bass assembled from Warmoth parts. Here are the specifications:
- Warmoth hard ash body (quite heavy) - I finished this with Danish oil all the way up to 1,000 grid. No filler material was used. So, the grain of the wood can be felt, which is very nice and unique, IMO.
- Warmoth maple neck with rosewood fingerboard and Warmoth satin finish - There are no dots on the surface of the fingerboard. There are dots on the top side, though.
- Gotoh 201 Chrome bridge (strings-thru-body) - One of the screwtops was broken during installation. I could not remove the part in the wood as the hard ash is quite dense. But, I attached the screw top to the bridge using epoxy glue. It does not affect anything at all on the bass cosmetically or playability-wise.
- Nordstrand NJ4SV humbucking split-coil pickups
- Audere preamp with bass/mid/treble/blend controls as well as passive tone control and active/passive switch (volume/passive tone control stacked and bass/treble stacked). FYI, when the bass in is passive mode, the blend does work due to the specific design of Audere preamps.
- Fender tuning machines with drop-D hipshot tuning machine on E string. I will provide the extra tuning machine.
- Dunlop flush mount straplocks.
- The finger ramp seen in the pictures is NOT included.
I built this bass in early 2004 and it has the characteristics of a typical late-70's jazz bass. The body finish was done by me under the supervision of a friend who is an artist and has professional experience in woodworking. Due to the weight of the hard ash, it has amazing sustain, as well as strong bass and treble response. The mids are a bit scooped; however, I balanced this using a rosewood fingerboard. Using the bridge pickup with a slight boost of mids gives some great finger tones! For slappers, you can imagine this bass is great!
I used this bass on "Junk Mail" from my album "Clashes" (slap parts and the melody doubling the horns) and Dan Moses' album "Sailors Gone.
I will ship the body and neck separately in order to reduce the risk of damage during transportation. You will simply need to put the four screws and neck plate back and the bass will be ready to go. The neck is so stable that it almost never moves and the fretwork is so good that the bass can have quite low action with no dead spots. Apart from the old strings, I will also throw in a set of brand new strings to your liking. You will just have to let me know what you prefer (I use DR lo-riders on this bass)...
