Wendler Electrocoustic Fretless Bass, 4-string, #173

Carved Western Red Cedar body
34" inch scale maple neck
Unlined fretless pao ferro fingerboard
Carved cocobolo tailpiece
Compensated saddle
Tortoise-shell pickguard
Wendler MagPi transducer system (both piezo and magnetic pickups)
Sunburst finish with clear gloss coat
Two controls - volume knob and a blend control to mix the mag pickup and the piezo
Side dots at the location of every “fret”
5.6 lbs!

The bass is in near-perfect condition except for a small group of three very minor dings on the back, about 1/32" across, you can just barely feel them and I cannot get them to show up in a photograph.

I purchased this bass in July 2008 directly from Dave Wendler for $1,000 plus shipping. Dave built it for NAMM in 2007 and he subsequently kept it as his personal bass. I am fairly certain that it is the bass that is pictured on the Wendler web page here:

http://www.electrocoustic.com/instruments.html

This is a super-warm, sweet sounding bass that is very easy to play and intonate. Great for copping a double-bass-like tone. Here is sound sample of the bass, recorded direct to the computer via an audio interface:

mp3 sound sample

I love this bass, but I rarely play it. I have two Rob Allen MB-2 5-strings with the high-C and I’m hooked on that string configuration.

$750 + actual cost of shipping with insurance. Paypal payment required. I will ship either UPS or FEDEX, whichever you prefer. The bass will be shipped inside a Kaces gig bag, packed in an appropriately sized box. If you wish to estimate shipping cost, my zip code is 84098.

I’m sorry but I am not interested in any trades.

Cheers,

Jeff

Wow. That sounds great. Great playing and with all the talk of which of the semi-acoustic piezo sounds most like an upright, this one seems like the closest. I own two Turners and have owned and played RA's and this one sounds closer.

Thanks, I'd love to take credit for the playing, but that's my teacher Denson Angulo playing the bass ("bassius" on Talkbass). I agree that the Wendler does a more convincing double bass imitation than the Rob Allens.

how is the action on this? It looks to be pretty high in 1 of the pics but it may just be the angle. If it is high can it go to a fairly low action?

I own one of these. Fabulous instruments, top-notch craftsmanship...and only 5-6 pounds! Higher action definitely results in an uncanny upright bass tone. Woody and deep. Lower action, it seems to sound a lot like a fretless Precision with the magnetic pickup soloed. Great price for a quality American-made bass.
Whoever buys this will be very happy!

Thanks for the kinds comments!

The action is not that high, I think it's just the angle of the photo. It has a standard truss rod so the action can be adjusted.

I sure would love to get that bass but I just don't have anywhere to use it...it just wouldn't fit in my band
