FS: Zon Legacy Elite Special 4-String

$2100.00 OBO

*** ORIGINAL ZON HARDSHELL CASE INCLUDED!!

I'm selling one of my favorite basses of all time! Mechanically, Structurally, Sonically, and Electronically, this bass is in PERFECT working and playing order.

HOWEVER, there were some factory defects in the outer laquer / finish, and there are also a couple of small nicks and dings (see photos below).

I bought this bass brand new in the early 2000's and gigged with it for about a year. After that, I switched exclusively to 5-string, and the Zon went into it's case and has been played only occassionally ever since.

Over time, what started out as a very small pin hole imperfection in the finish on the rear of the body gradually grew into what you see below I assure you, this is the result of air getting inside the finish, and NOT USER-ABUSE!! (except for the couple of dings on the butt, which is gig wear and tear) And this is finish-surface damage ONLY, and the wood is still sealed / protected by the poly coating, which is undamaged.

I recently (Sept. 2011) priced out a new one of these (exact same model and specs) on the Zon website, using the "build your own bass" tool. The retail on this is NO LESS THAN $4500.00!! (Check for yourself: Zon Guitars)

I have spoken with Joe Zon, himself, on the phone and he has expressed that if the bass is shipped back to him, he will restore the finish to FACTORY QUALITY for a very reasonable price. I would love to ship it back and have it repaired myself, but I really need the cash right now, and I rarely play this, so I'd love to see it go to someone who will really love it and play the hell out of it. You can essentially own one of the finest hand-made boutique bass guitars - in BRAND NEW CONDITION - for well under the retail sale price! Zon is a small company that stands by their work, and they are very easy to get on the phone any time, and always willing to help you out.

Or, if you're not concerned with the cosmetics, you can have a really amazing instrument for a really great price!

Please message for details and more photos, if interested. Local pickup / delivery only, unless you are willing to pay shipping costs. With a non-refundable Paypal deposit, I will drive anywhere within 125 miles of Westchester County, NY to deliver, otherwise, you pick up.

Thanks!!

Bill C.

AND NOW FOR THE PAIN!!

These are my fault....

OUCH!! This started out as a teeny tiny little pinhole...

You can see the paint is flaking where the neck and fingerboard join, a continuation of the defect...

Another shot of the main trouble spot:

Is it fair of me to ask what he said the refinish job would cost? I wouldn't hold him to it of course, but I'm curious to know at least the ballpark.

Zon

I've always wanted a Legacy Special and can absolutely attest to the quality having owned a legacy elite. Seems as though this finish problem wasn't uncommon in that era of Zon basses which is unfortunate. Well worth fixing , good luck!

That is one fine bass, despite the finish problem. OTOH, nobody cares about the back of the bass, right?

He said about $1000, which would include him completely disassembling the bass and refinishing the whole thing. I've spoken to another local builder who could get the job done for around $700, but I think for the extra couple hundred bucks, I'd personally rather have Zon do it.

Having Joe redo it is well worth it.

I had him redo a Hyper bass.

It looks from the pictures like there was something wrong in the application process and it's too bad that through no fault of your own you're having to take such a hit. Would like to have seen him take a little more responsibility for this.
