I just bought my dream P-Bass, so unfortunately this excellent 30+ year old MIJ Electra has to go. This was made in the Matsumoku factory during the golden era of Japanese production. This is a really cool transition instrument that isn't a straight up copy but is still more vintage cool than the IMHO dated futuristic designs that came later in the 80s. Feel:
This feels and sounds like a great Precision bass should. The neck is straight, rock-solid, and adjustable in both directions. Fretwear is minimal, particularly for a 30 year old bass (it has been strung with flats for the 3+ years I've owned it, but will ship with new Fender rounds). Hardware - tuners, bridges, etc - is also all in very good working condition. The pickguard is a replacement which was originally an (ugly, IMO) red pearl. I attempted to find an original flat black PG but parts are pretty rare, so rather than spending $60 on a custom I spent $3 on latex spraypaint. The paint is holding up well, though you can see it start to wear through where I anchor my thumb. Sound:
As you have probably noticed, the electronics are also not original. The pickup is made by Villex and sells new for $154 (www.villex.com
). Though the electronics are passive, there is a mid control as well as having a standard treble tone knob. This provides a wide variety of tone options. Turning the mid all the way up gives you more of a vintage, forward tone, while dialing it back a bit allows more of a deep Reggae feel. If you're more of a set and forget type of player, it's also just an amazing P pickup and will do anything you need it to do. To accomodate the additional tone knob, the previous owner moved the output jack to the side. Look:
The finish is very thin and has allowed the bass to age very gracefully. The body and neck are well broken in but not abused, and in the pictures you can see light wear by the strap button and some buckle rash on the back. Other/Full Disclosure:
It is currently set up with medium action with little neck relief, and there is a nominal amount of buzz on the higher frets. I'm not a setup wiz so I'm not sure if it needs any fretwork or just a good neck adjustment, but I hate taking the neck off for truss rod adjustments so I got it 'good enough' and played the heck out of it.
Also, I never noticed it until I went looking (or maybe it wasn't present when I was using La Bellas?) but it does have the usual Fender dead-spot on the G string. Finally, one of the pots seems a bit shorter than the others, so the knob rests against the pickguard, and the PU adjustment screws are a little hard to adjust. No biggies, but I try especially hard to mention every little thing when selling to someone who won't have an opportunity to play before buying. Price:
I'd like to get $375 shipped/Paypal CONUS. I don't have the original case, but will include a pretty nice gigbag. I would also think about parting it out (loaded neck, loaded body, electronics only, whatever) so let me know if there's something you have in mind. I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have. No trades please.
(note: Imgur seems to be down at the moment, but once I can I will upload more pix.
