FT:*FEELER* '74 Rickenbacker 4001 *MINTY*

Sign in to disble this ad
Here for your viewing pleasure is a beautiful 1974 Rickenbacker 4001. I just put a deposit on it. Ricks have never been quite my tone, so I'm feeling around to see what kind of offers I'd get for it. Trade only. Plus cash if you trade up.
No 5stringers, got that covered.
Looking for a Lakland Skyline DJ or JO, first run with a RW board & Aeros PLUS at least a grand added.
or similar bass.

Pics are of a minty 1978, this is EXACTLY how my '74 looks, mine is slightly darker Will have pics when I pick it up.
AGAIN... this is a feeler. You can be GUARANTEED my '74 looks just as minty, vintage, same glow. everything. (no music store sticker on headstock) PICS OF ACTUAL BASS WILL BE POSTED WITHIN A WEEK.

Thank you.
Hawk

Thanks for looking. Thread will be open until the end of Jan.

Isn't that Autumn-Glo? Nice. Matte finish or shiny?

Not to derail, but from what I've read on the web, it appears that a late '70's shiny finish in this color was actually called Walnut. The Autumn-Glo's made then had a satin finish.

Subject: 5.26 What is the difference between Autumnglo and Walnut?
"The earliest version of Autumnglo was simply shaded brown. The middle clear areas on most of these old guitars have yellowed, but wasn't originally apparent. The next version was just Fireglo laid on rather heavily. The last version was back to that original brown, but in a satin finish, while the gloss version of that color was designated Walnut. So when someone says Autumnglo, you always have to ask "WHICH Autumnglo"?" [John Hall, jhall@rickenbacker.com, 2/17/2000]

I bought my first new bass in '78 - a '78 Autumn-Glo. It had a satin finish with black pickguard and nameplate. Inner coloring was a tad darker that the '78 pictured. Still have it and don't think I'll ever let it go. The one pictured is a beauty though!

Phil, you are probably right. Walnut/Autumn glow... so similar. Like Black/Ebony. But your info doesn't explain the shiny finish on the pictured Autumn Glow '78.
I do think my '74 IS slightly darker in the middle. I will post actual pics ASAP to avoid confusion and conflicting info.
I'm not a big "Rick" enthusiast, so Thx for the post and info...
Hawk

The "Glo" finishes were all shiny, hence the use of the word glo. Nice bass, good luck.

That's why I asked, the 2 finishes are so similar!! Hard to tell unless you're holding it. Beautiful bass, BTW. I've had 5 vintage Ricks over the years but never one in this color or this clean.

Per the quote from JHall of Rickenbacker.com, and my own personal experience, I think the pictured glossy '78 may well be Walnut. The last production run of Autumnglo that JHall mentions (satin finish) took place during the mid/late 70's/early 80's, and hasn't been offered since on this model bass. I know there's alot of opinions about this out there though; it's a pretty rare color.

Best of luck with the trade, it's bound to go fast. Beautiful bass...

Finish....

OK, If we could..... lets get off the subjective and confusing issue of the finish on this bass. I put this out there as a feeler to generate some interest. When I replace the pics this coming week with the "actual" bass, then the floor is open.
Thanks,
Hawk

LOL! No body parts yet. (Oh yea, looks flat Black... hahaha!)

For interested parties....
Cash value IMO is around $2000. I will not consider anything less. I'll wait til hell freezes over before I let it go for less. (OH, nvm, The Eagles DID get back together.... jk).
Please consider this when offering trades.
Thanks,
Hawk
