FT Feeler...1988 Modulus TBX Prototype 5 String

Sign in to disble this ad
This is a pretty light FT feeler...this bass KILLS but I would prefer a 4 string. I kind of knew when I bought it I may want a 4 again, but couldn't find a 4 string so picked this up...

Per the previous owner "1988 Modulus Quantum 5 TBX prototype. Quantum 5 neck thru-body, with poplar wood body halves. The poplar is unusually colored. The pickups are custom Bartolini’s. The bridge was made by Stars Guitars, tuners are length is 35”from Modulus who described It was built by Modulus in late 80's in San Francisco"

I will get some new pics this week (these are from when I bought)...but these give you the idea. Very clean bass for 20+ years old. Plays and sounds amazing so not much else to say.

Trade wise a 4 string TBX would be fantastic! I am a realist though so throw anything my way. In general I like older and more obscure basses (80's in particular) and am more into traditional/passive tones (although I don't mind active if like the Modulus which has a fairly tame circuit).

PM w/ any questions...not sure how long I will keep this up but always like to test the GAS with fellow TB'ers

This thing is like the sun. I know I shouldn't stare directly at it but I have a hard time turning away! Any interest in a modulus flea 4?

Also, any more pics? This thing genuinely has my interest because I've never seen one before.

4 strings and preferably a bit older...some things that may "perk" interest...

- Modulus TBX 4 string
- Spector or Ken Smith (mid or early 80's)
- Carl Thompson (70's or 80's)
- F-Bass (older one)
- Any other more obscure type of bass (Citron, Leduc, etc)

For the right deal I have no problem adding cash

Thanks Adam

Is it set up passive? Also, is it the usual Modulus 17mm string spacing?

Crazy thought, but with that really tight string spacing (16 mm?), could you just replace the bridge, get a custom nut, and convert it to a four string? That's all Modulus did when they came out with the 5 Wide models, use a 6 string neck.

String spacing is tight would have to measure to be exact 16mm or 17mm I assume.

It is active electronics, not sure of the pre-amp but could check. The 3 switches turn the P/U's on or off and it is master volume + a stacked active bass/treble.

Thanks Adam

Few potential deals I am considering...here is some detail also directly from Geoff Gould on this bass...

"It is the original Quantum bass. After developing the Quantum 5 SP bolt-on bass, the thru-body became the Q5TB. The bass I play is from the same mold. The wood is a unique piece of colored poplar, cut into quadrants (if it’s the bass I think it is.) The pickups are probably Bartolini (do they say bp on them?) with the bridge pickup being a humbucker, the middle a split-coil, and the neck p/u a single-coil with hum canceller. There is a simple preamp (usually was a Bartolini TC1)."

This would be a great candidate for an EADGC 5, someone who likes a narrow neck should snatch this up.
