FT Feeler: 1992 Midnight Blue Rickenbacker 4003

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently took in this roadwarrior of a Rickenbacker 4003. The previous owner obviously played it a LOT and I understand why. It is a fantastic bass. It is a better playing bass than my 4001. I always take my new basses to my buddy Chef when I get them and he sets them up for me. This is the first one I've taken him that he said "I wouldn't touch it." However, I can't seem to get used to the color. Call me shallow (or stupid, if you wish), but it doesn't really look like a Ric to me at this point. If I keep it, I'll likely switch up the pickguard (the previous owner supplied a white guard as well) and possibly the hardware.

Given that the combination of midnight blue with black trim and hardware seems to be a bit rare for a Ric, I thought I'd see what I could get in trade before I monkey around with it.

Other than the obvious bumps and bruises, the case is has a missing latch (though once again, the previous owner supplied a replacement that I've yet to install).

What am I looking for? I once had an old precision with an added j pickup. I really liked it but ended up getting rid of it in a trade that I couldn't pass up. Therefore, I think I would lilke to try some sort of PJ again or possibly '51 style of precision which I've never had. I've also been itching to try a Lakland. I tried Chef's Lakland P5 but that darn B string makes me so uncomfortable that I couldn't get a good feel for it.

Trade interests in order(all trades +/- cash, obviously)
1. US Lakland Glaub PJ, rosewood 1.75" neck
2. US Lakland Glaub
3. Nash PJ
4. Fender CS 51 Precision
5. Fender US PJ
6. Lakland Skyline Glaub PJ
7. Fender MIJ 51 Precision
8. ????????

It is a great bass and I may get used to the color but am just curious as to what is out there........

And now for some pics:

worn paint on both sides of neck

I already received a trade offer but forgot to mention that "Four strings are king."

wow, this thing generates some interest. Apparently, not everyone is as unsure of the color scheme as I am.

Jaymi really wants this bass. You know you want his 4001........

I'm getting a lot of offers of standard (non PJ) precisions. I have been sorely tempted as it is my favorite bass but I don't really neeeeeeed another......unless you happen to have a CS Pino and a need for some cash.
