FT: G&L 5500

TRADED

Up for trade is this G&L 5500. I've owned it and played it as my main bass for over 8 years, but recently I've gotten bitten with 4-string fever again.

The G&L has a maple neck. The body, I believe, is also maple. Maybe a better wood authority would confirm or correct that. It has EMG active pickups and a two band eq. The neck is straight, the action is good, the truss rod works fine. It sounds great, I'll post some sounds later. I've played it live, on radio and tv, and done a lot of recording with it.

I bought it from a friend of mine who was the original owner. He cut the point off the headstock so it would look more "Fenderish." I have all the original papers and a hardshell case that comes with it with several cracks and gouges, but all the hinges and snaps work fine. The bass has several small dings, but they don't show up on the pictures. Very soon after purchasing it, I put a gouge into the edge of the headstock, you can see that in the picture. I was playing on the General Jackson showboat and while taking it off, I pushed it right into the moving blades of an overhead fan. It caused a gouge and a few small cracks that have never moved, and there was never a problem tuning it. The tuners work fine. The volume pot could use a cleaning, it crackles now and then. The concentric eq pot is loose and could use cleaning also, you'll hear that when I post a track of the bass. It's a 34" scale. It's heavy. According my bathroom scale, which my wife doesn't trust, it's ten pounds. Here are some pictures:

There are two dots on the back, they look like dowels put in at G&L. There's some buckle rash, but nothing through the finish.

Here's the gouge where some idiot pushed the bass into a fan...not a human fan, almost did that with another bass years ago...long story.

There are dings and scrapes here and there, but nothing major except the "idiot gouge" above.

I have no history selling basses online, but I'm easy to find. My wife, children and I have lived in the same house, which we own, here in Nashville for over 20 years, and I play bass every Sunday at Nashville Cowboy Church, it's on WSM, Sirius, Shortwave and viewable online: Welcome to Nashville Cowboy Church where Nothing Else Feels Quite Like It.

For trade, I want to do a straight trade, no money either way, we each pay for our own shipping. I'm looking for a Fender Precision. Mostly I'm interested in a player with good sound. I'm not worried about wear, heck I might push it into a fan I'd like an American made one, but would take the right MIM or CIJ. Also, I'm not completely excluding something other than Fender as long as it's a real player.

Thanks for looking, drop me a line for more info. I'll post a track of the bass noodling with the different pickups and eq's later. Also, make sure you check out Cowboy Church, if you're not busy on a Sunday morning you can watch it through that website, or stop by here if you're in Nashville.

What is the string spacing ? Interested in a modded MIJ 62 RIP ? CAR, Rosewood. mods are...
2010 Fender MIA (Highway 1) Jazz neck
Hipshot billet style top loading bridge (one of the best bridges around I think)
Sadowsky split P.
mint guard.

It's a looker and plays better than it looks. It's the backup to my 83 P and as I almost never use that, a backup seems extraneous...

Pic's if you're interested.

Hi, lowfeqgeek, sorry, thanks for asking. Maybe if I don't find something that grabs me I might change my mind and repost, but I'd like to try for a while first.

mdogs, pm answered, thanks much.

Here's an mp3 of the bass, I ran it dry into cubase through a saffire pro 14 audio interface. The sound is a little quiet, being dry. I noodled and changed from neck to both to bridge, then messed with the eq, you can hear the crackling at that point.

4Mal,

The strings are 5/16 apart at the nut, the nut is 1 7/8 edge to edge, the strings are about 9/16 apart at the bridge. I'll take a look at your bass and pm you. Thanks for writing.

Nice bass - that body looks very similar in wood to my Stingray and Sabre, both of which are swamp ash. Could be a possibility. Looks like fun to play.

I'm about 98% sure it is swamp ash.

This might be my favorite L5500 I've ever seen, even if it is missing the signature eye gouger on the headstock. Shame!!!

But an awesome bass I'd love to own, nonetheless...

And bump.

I really wish G&L would go back to this headstock. I really dislike the 3+2 headstock bump!

Thanks guys, yes and it is fun to play. It has been my "go to" bass for 8 years. I'm just smitten with p bass fever again. I'm talking to someone now about a trade. If it doesn't work out, I might put this up for sale.

Different strokes...

I love the 3+2 headstock for several reasons. For one, it's shorter (less mass further out), and 2, I prefer how the strings are better aligned between the nut and the tuners.

Oh, and I like the shape, too.
