That's a beauty. The mahogany early G&Ls are unimpeachable IMHO.

Bump for a really Nice bass. Just picked up a 83 HOG Wankay in excellent condition (first year of point). Mine has the same dark spot on the headstock (under the E-tuner) as this one. Under close inspection, it does not seem to be a cigarette burn (which is what I suspected), it is very precise like a tooling mark? And I don't mean the dot on the back of the headstock which all my G&Ls have. Any G&L experts out there that can identifiy what this mark is? Any other early L-1000 owners have that mark oth theirs? Sorry didn't mean to hijack the thread, but it may be an interesting feature that I thought was a burn or stain. Coincendence???

It's most likely where the protective rubber cover on a guitar stand has reacted to the finish. Not uncommon.

Thanks Spiritfield, that sounds like a very logical explanation I'm sure you nailed it. Mine is very light on the left side, like the brown tubing color on some of the older stands I've seen. Not only that but there had to be a second on the other side, and sure enough, therer is also a much less obvious mark on the right side on mine. Obviously not limited to the L-1000 then either. When I saw it on my L-1000 it was kind of DeJaVu so maybe I've seen it on other guitars and didn't give it much thought. I used to play in a band where the guitarist used to park a lit smoke in beteween the strings above the bridge on his Les Paul. When I saw the tan/brown mark on my recently aquired L-1000 I suspected a burn mark, but the bass was too clean for a smoker to have owned.

Anyway, Thanks, This is a great site, learn something new every day here,

Reb

I think you guys are right on with a stand support making the line on the headstock. I had a smokie L1K a while back and the smolder area on the neck was more like a big splotch, way less defined and, of coarse, the bass just had that musty ashtray smell to it.

This Hog L1k just smells like ole school goodness.
Price drop!!! $1050 shipped!

I've owned a lot of early G&L's that exhibit this. The '84 Tookay in my avatar sports the marks too.

Also possible that it is a burn from tooling during production.
