Yes it is made in the USA. The bass is passive, with two volume controls - one for each pickup.

Two things to note - calling it "passive" is an understatement. Though there is no preamp the output of this bass is huge. The MFD pickups are very agressive.

The bridge pickup soloed sounds "weak" to some. I have read that the reason for this is that it was intended to be used as the 'tone' control (not soloed) with most of the sound from the neck pickup.
