Talking Gibson Ripper Bass - Natural, Beautiful & in Excellent Condition!l

Hello,

To help finance a bass I’m looking to purchase I’ve decided to sell my Gibson Ripper Bass (1976 I believe).
It is original, in excellent condition, and is $1,350.00, shipped within the Continental United States.

It comes with the original hard-shell case which is also in excellent condition. The neck is maple, it is straight, the body is Alder. This is a light instrument (about 7.5 pounds - I don't have a scale but it's lighter than my Rick 4003), plays like butter, and sounds terrific. The strings are a month old and have had very little play time.

This was and remains a pampered instrument.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Gibson Ripper, I’ve included a site that you might find helpful. It’s a terrific resource that has all sorts of info regarding Gibson Basses.

http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/L-9Sripper.php

Unlike “Little Jimmie Hofner” this bass will only be posted for a week.

No trades please. Price is firm.

Thanks for looking!

Yes, it does look like it's new. It's been with me for many years. The previous owner took great care of it.

It weighs approx 7.5 pounds. I don't have a scale but I'm sure I'm close.

Gibson Ripper

That is in incredible condition. As I read your description, I thought $1350? he's hoping, but on seeing the pics... probably the cleanest Ripper left alive.

Any cleaner she'd be haild as the... Well, never mind.

Yes, 34" scale. The width is much like that of a current Rick 4003, not as thin as a Gibson Thunderbird or Fender Jazz.

It's basically the same neck they used on the 70s Les Paul Signature, RD Artist, and 34" EB0 & EB3.

Greg Lake of ELP played one, black as I recall.

A regular 70s rocker.

Personally, I think it would've blended in better than the bass used in this video. But that's just my artistic opinion of course.

Very interested in the Ripper

Hi...

I have only a couple of questions. Obviously, this bass has been very well loved.

1. I believe my original '74 blonde Ripper was a maple body as well. I saw the link you provided and will check into it. In the mean time, do you know if they went to alder in '76? Did you ever play one of the first Rippers and if so, what do you think of the sustain of the bass given the alder body? (Long shot question...whose memory is that good! )

(Certainly, running the strings through the body is a big plus there. The Ripper II--way too expensive even at $1900 at Sweetwater--I believe is also alder but the strings hang right off the saddle.)

2. In the close up pics of the upper and lower neck, I see the lacquer and/or glue along the frets above, but the lower frets look cleaner. Has the bass been refretted even partially? Also, I hate to be a pain, but is there close-up of the middle of the neck from the front?

It is INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL!!!

I don't get on here very often. What's the customary way to contact you about the transaction?

I'm excited! - David

Hello and thanks for your interest in my Ripper.

I purchased a new Ripper back in either '74 or '75. It had the maple body. I don't recall if it resonated any better or worse. What I did notice when I purchased the one I currently have was the weight difference. As soon as I picked it up I knew it was lighter.

Ripper was made with Alder in '75 & '76 per the info on the site I've included. The body was slight different on the '74 models per the site info. The horns got pointer. That was the other thing I picked up on when I got this bass.

The bass does not look like it was ever refretted, or altered in any way. The thruss rod works in both directions. That was something I verified when I purchased the bass.

NOTE: I want to be clear the the frets have been dressed.

I will take several more pics of the fingerboard and post for your review.

Please feel free to PM me (private message function) if you are interested in the instrument.

Thanks again for looking.

Pics of full fingerboard

Here are the fret pics. Please note that the frets were dressed at some point during the instrument's 30 plus years.

I've also tried to take a pic of the surface imperfections/marks on the back of the body. It's difficult to capture them. Even live the bass needs to be held just right in the light to see them. I've done my best.

The same is true regarding the black pickguard. It's evident the previous owner played with a pick. I, however, do not. There are scuffs that are difficult to capture on a picture.

And no, I don't play that kind of misic, but like the song and performance. After awhile the regular rock n roll classics become a tad boring.

Sorry, but it's true.

Emails & PMs replied to.

Thank you all for your interest!

I'm not looking for any trades at the moment but do appreciate all the ones that have been tabled for consideration. Thank you for taking the time to solicite my feedback. They are all very nice items.

The "Made in the USA" is stamped on the back of the headstock. It is partially covered by the tuners. If someone is considering purchasing the bass I'll take a picture of it along with the serail number.

This instrument's body is Alder, not Maple. My bass was made in the 'inbetween years' of maple production. It is lighter. Maple does tend to have a bit more snap than the Alder.

The instrument I'm interested in will be gone by Friday if I don't come up with the difference ($$$). After that there will not be any incentive on my part to sell the Ripper. That's why I'm removing it from the classified section (for sale section; I'll close the thread).

Hope this info helps all current/future lookers.

Cheers!
