This is my fav J of all time. I've played it alongside Sadowsky and Alleva Coppolo (sorry for the spelling) and it will go toe to toe, easily. Preference would be a matter of taste if the headstock's were covered... it's that good...

Has a super stiff maple neck with maple board. Bound with pearl blocks and very sweet super low profile frets. As it is a 75 RI, the neck profile is in the GL camp but a tad wider which makes it fit better than a GL in my hand. The neck is simply amazing.

The only mods from stock are
* Graphtech Graphite saddles
* Vintage Vibe, split coils
* Schaller Locks

The only real scars are down behind the bridge where it looks like someone was careless with the strings too many times while stringing. It was that way when I got it. Not much but I'll shoot a detail shot of that shortly.

One oddity is that the 'double dot' to indicate the 12th fret, on this bass is at the 8th fret, with a single dot marking the octave. This bugged me for about 5 minutes - I had completely forgotten about it until I went to take the photo's here. I consider it sort of a 'rare bird' kinda thing as opposed to a real flaw.

Weight is 9.5 bathroom scale method.

Currently strung with newish TIJF's in very good, low hour condition. I've had LaBella Deep Talkin flats as well as TI PowerBass and Super Alloy strings on it over time. The neck was an easy setup no matter the string tension.

'burst, maple on maple, black pickguard. 2 pc Ash body. Killer punch!

L series dates to 1991 to 1992 . This is a MIJ not a CIJ. The bass is in very, very good shape with some light scars behind the bridge, a small rough spot at the top of the headstock, a minor finish scratch, unphotographable on the bottom edge, swirling on the pickguard. Fantastic condition for a near to 20 year old instrument!

Includes very nice leather strap, (3.5" IIRC) with Schaller ends. (I have shoulder issues and 9.5 is the high end for me weight wise so I used the wider strap and that has worked fine for getting me through my typical 3 set nights. It really is a nice strap so I'll pass it along with.)

This is a killer player and one of the best sounding J's out there.

$825 plus freight at actual

Finally outta town, 3/7, 8 & 9 - back after that!

* the inevitable - if it's so good, why are you selling question ? Good question. part of it is that I spent $900 today on another bass. That bass fits into my acoustic scene better than the J. My 83 P workhorse fit's my surf 'a billy thing the best and I really can't afford both that one and the J ... So it was down to the J or the Brio. Lee Barker knows where I live and looks too much like the hangin' judge for me to annoy without serious cause ...

I've played this bass and expressed deep interest in it in the past as it is one of the finest Fenders I've ever played. One of the only Fenders I've ever lusted for.

In short, if I didn't already have my ultimate dream bass and hadn't recently bought a bunch of stuff, it would be mine.

Mal's a great guy as well. Best of luck on the sale!!

I never got to play this one but have heard lots of praise. I'm surprised that you are letting this one go.

Me too. It was formerly an 'un-touchable' but... I scored a mint 96 Acoustibass backup for my 94 - why is it I fall in love with un-obtanium basses that are no longer made ?

Seeing as at least 80 % of my gig's are acoustic support, that seemed like a hole... I've been really concerned that the Acoustibass would get creamed on a gig or otherwise meet disaster. As far as I see it, the only real option would have been an MB-2 which given my job status would be another flavor of un-obtanium ...

So I'm offering this J to the gods as insurance :~)

BTW - I think we need to organize a Saturday Night Orphans GTG somewhere soon. Ya think ? I'm still passing on the cigars but a bass guy's nght out cheering on Bart seems a worthy cause to me.

70's spacing on the bridge pup? Is the Cavity sheilded? Nut width?

Not sure on the spacing - my understanding of it is that the MIJ basses of that period all used 1 pickup spacing. If I had to guess I would say is is 'typical' Jazz spacing.

Cavity is plate shielded IIRC - the bass is extremely quiet, like record in front of the computer quiet due to the pickups which are split coil hum cancelling. They are wax potted under vacuum, then foil shielded. The shield drains to ground through a braided shield for the pickup leads.

Width of neck at the nut is 1.537" the nut is a little narrower as it does not overhange the neck binding.

I would assume that it would have a 70's spacing on the bridge pickup. Since I am finally home for several days I can measure blackie's spacing if that would help.

No Pre. Just V-V-T I have the original pickups however 1 has an open meaning rewind time IIRC. I had Pete Biltoft (Vintage Vibe Guitars aka V-V-G) make me a set of 'side by side' coil, hum cancelling pickups for it. They are fantastic. Very much a J single coil sound but quiet.

Post Crackertones I haven't ever needed a round wound aggro-tone machine so a couple of years ago, I yanked the Audere and went back to passive with TIJF flat's which is a lot more my style.

Plays like a dream ...

I can have the original pickup rewound to spec for a pretty low cost and include that set if someone is particularly interested. Basically I would leave the V-V-G's installed and charge only what it costs to have the 1 pickup rewound. I talked with Pete about that and he was cool with it. I've had myriad J's IMO - the V-V-G's rock!
