Holiday Special: '78 Franken-P now cheaper!

Sign in to disble this ad
PRICE DROP: I'm offering this strange Franken-Fender for only $400 shipped anywhere in the lower 48 US states. I deleted the old thread, but I'll repost the description I had here before. No guarantees, no returns - read the linked thread for details. Limited time offer! See below:

For sale or trade is this odd parts bass. I recently acquired this and have only played it in two practices. Neck is an original '70s Fender with several odd characteristics (see this thread for details): http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showth...0s+fender+neck

Body is done in a sparkle finish that has several colors in a black base (hard to photograph). I don't know the origin of the body, but I don't believe it's a Fender. Has EMG pickup, Schaller tuners, other parts unknown. This bass plays well and should be played and appreciated by someone who thinks cool, funky (weird) basses are a good thing. There's nothing wrong with it that I'm trying to hide (make sure you read the linked thread); I just want a bass that suits my playing more.

So what do I want? Ideally a P body with a J neck, and preferably a P/J pickup configuration. I know it might be a long shot, but I thought I'd put it out there to see if there's any interest. Please ask any questions. I have lots more photos.

Can you post the "several odd charicteristics" detail to this thread? The link brings me nowhere. Thanks.

Sorry about that - let me try to link to the thread again. To summarize quickly: neck has had trussrod work done, probably been defretted and then refretted, and maybe had a '70s microtilt adjustment added at some point?

1970's Fender neck: is this normal?

Been out of town and away from my computer for a while. Thought I'd bump this up one more time before leaving it alone, just in case.........

...after a month of me ignoring this thread, I realize that the bass has also sat untouched and ignored that long. Sad, really. Apparently I don't need this bass. Anyone want to make an offer?

I want this bass so much, but I'm flat broke. Hopefully it's still around when I get my tax return

Couple of PMs returned. Still willing to do cash or trade, but trades would have to be even or cash on your end. Thanks -

Thought I'd add a couple pics to show the changing sparkliness in all its glory. The pic of the back shows what the bass typically looks like, but in bright light it's much more green.

I'm going to take this beast to practice in a couple hours, after adjusting the pickup to try to balance the sound a little more. Maybe I'll learn to love the chunky neck after all....

It is quite cosmic. I played it for about 1 1/2 hours earlier with my band, and actually found that my hand didn't mind the chunky neck so much. It's certainly thicker than the P I typically play with that group, but not hard to play at all. In fact, I then switched to my standard bass to compare, and here's the summary: sparkle-bass has smoother neck on the back (almost made my usual one seem sticky when I switched...), and feels just slightly neck-heavier than my other one (but not bad). The other real difference is that on my white bass I get a really even amount of volume on all 4 strings through my rig, but seems like the sparkle-bass was not quite as loud on the upper strings. Maybe needs to have that half of the pickup raised? Anyway, here's a gratuitous shot of both:
