I think there's something wrong with me - Tom Clement Jon Fretless 5 (soundclips inc)

Sign in to disble this ad
There must be something wrong with me because I have this habit of selling absolutely fantastic basses... I really don't get it but here goes again.

I've had this for nearly 2 months now and it is really fantastic I just can't quite get the tone I'm looking for out of it. It's practically pristine and sounds awesome just not the particular brand of awesome that I'm after. I'm a little hesitant in listing this bass at all simply because it's not easy to come across fretless basses that sound this good. Period. Whoever gets this is gonna have they're hands on a gem. Tom's basses are really something else.

This awesome photo was taken by John Nam. This bass was his before it was mine

More pics soon!

BODY:: Ash
NECK:: Maple
FINGERBOARD:: Bloodwood
STRINGS:: La'Bella Deep Talkin' Flats
PICKUPS:: Nordstrand DC
ELECTRONICS::Passive
SCALE:: 34 inch. 24 fretlines
STRING SPACING:: 19mm
SOUND/VIDEO CLIPS:: Clip 1

I'll let it go for $1200 shipped to anywhere in the CONUS. The ONLY trades I'm interested in are for fretless 5 string basses. I'm willing to throw in some cash for the right bass. I'm specifically after a Pedulla Pentabuzz. This bass is no longer for trade!

Boy, you keep trading those basses and you are going to turn into me! You need to chill and transcribe more Tom Kennedy tunes! If I had your chops, I would be too busy playing to have any GAS.

Haha, I don't think being known as Dr. Cheese Jr. would be the worst thing in the world . It is about time for another transcription though. Thanks!

Kwesi, the facial expression in your avatar picture seems to match your mood in the first sentence you wrote in this thread; chagrined?

Have you tried a Lakland 55-02 or 55-94 fretless yet? They're incredible basses! The selectable mids and switchable bridge p'ups make these basses incredibly versatile, and the neck and fingerboard are great.

Good luck in your quest, Sr. Quixote.

Is there room in the cavity to add a pre-amp if I wanted to?

Definitely. Probably not a Bartolini since it has two modules but an Aguilar or something similar with only one module would fit fine.

Just checking - did you try it with rounds?

And to help the folks considering it - what tonal goals is it *not* meeting?
What are you going for that this one doesn't cover, and what does the Clement sound like?

Completely OT, but that's a great photo of the bass. I like how you've used a shallow depth of field to give it more of a portrait feel.

Yep, tried it with rounds. The sound was brighter, more aggressive and had a bit more mid punch too it but I just really liked the sound of the flats so I put them back on. As far as what it sounds like, that's what the clip is for, lol. Of course, with the tone control you can make it a little brighter or give it a tad more thud.

I'm looking for something more along the lines of a fretless jazz or something with a pup really close to the bridge for a Jaco or Tom Kennedy kind of sound - smooth but growly. Those two tones are different but I think I'd be more than happy with either.

Haha, I wish I could say it was mine! It was actually taken by John Nam when he had the bass. I hope to take photos as well as him one day.

I like the part in the clip where you smack the bottom of the piano with the bass.

LOL! I tried to play it off but I was seriously freaking out the entire time I recorded that part. Luckily, there was no damage done.
