Did your wife/girlfriend take a few of those pics or do you just really like pink nail polish?

Also, those are the best looking Ibby basses I've ever seen.

Beautiful bass, must sound really nice.

What is the scale lenght? And string spacing?

I got confused because there is one picture that shows just two pots, and others shows three pots ...

These seem very "Gary Willisesque". I've been in the market for a Gary Willis signature model but these seem like a tricked out variation of that same theme. How do they actually differ in playability and sound compared to a genuine, stock GW Ibanez model?

I believe I witnessed the debut of your song Drop the Chalupa BTW at August 2009 show at the Baked Potato in which Scott Henderson was supposed to be with you. Kirk Covington and Mitch Foreman were there only Scott somehow didn't make it. You played the song twice. Once not so much to your satisfaction in the first set and then it got more of a smile from your face when you did it again in the second. I thought it was cool both times though.

Am I wrong remembering that you were indeed playing a black Gary Willis signature model that night? It certainly looked like one. You did rip some rather righteous "Jacoesque" solos at that show!

Also saw you recently at a TJ Helmerich gig where he also did not show up at the BP.
You were playing a fretted Fender Jazz type that night. Personally I thought the fretless sounded way better through that Aguilar setup they have there.

Anyways I really am curious how you'd compare these basses to a stock Gary Willis model.

Hey Aztec Viking!

Hey there-
So-Yes they do have some Willis details-I actually own a Willis signature model myself (not a black one-but the natural swamp ash version- handmade Japanese model etc)
They have wider spacing to start-18 mm....Also the pre amp is of a higher quality IMHO..Its a Nordy to my specs on the Redwood fretless...Very cool-The mid control is excellent for dialling in more or less growl..Finish and fit is very good-The redwood is beautiful-the guys at the Custom Shop did a killer job, but I am changing direction bass wise somewhat, so really cant justify keeping all these..
You can hear both these on the CPT Kirk cd (avail. on my website, Rufus Philpot - Bass Player and hear a track "Drop the Chalupa" which features this...Click on the audio tab..

Re:2009 Baked Potato show...
Thanks for the compliment on the tune!-Actually i think we played it before somewhere with kirk-but NOT Mitch...And that was a great night-Kirk and Mitch were on fire...Scott was initially meant to play-in fact we are scheduled to play on 28th of this month too..We DID play it twice!

I cant recall what bass I used that night...-maybe I used one of these fretlesses , but not a black Willis (see above)....But again, glad it came across!

The Aguilar is superb, but def. works better with certain axes-The Willis style bass(es) sond GREAT with it..However, there are a couple of Youtube clips posted recently with a Fender style axe that sound pretty good (me with Mitch forman Qt..)

I do think for the $-these basses are pretty damn cool compared to a stock Willis model-the Redwood is the more versatile and closer to the Willis-and fo rthe money you are getting a truly one of a kind, custom built axe...Hell, I will even throw in some new decent strings (La Bella nickels)
Cheers
Rufus

I have no no doubt it's a very awesome axe. Thanks for the detailed response too! I'm sure I'll see you again soon at the Baked Potato. My most visited club in L.A.
