Kay KB-2 Vintage MIJ Short Scale Bass

Hi TBers--

SOLD!!!

Here for your consideration is a really special bass. I acquired this lovely specimen from another TBer and in the process found that I am a long-scale guy. So up she goes!

Best I can tell, this bass dates from 1962-65 and was likely made in the Teisco factory in Japan. It is a Kay-branded copy of a Gibson EB2. It feels light as a feather (don't have an exact weight but it is not an issue!). Three tone sunburst. Bound and blocked neck, looks like quartersawn, with a dark rosewood fretboard.

When I received this baby, the action was sky-high and the neck had a bit of a warp. I turned it over to my MIJ-loving luthier and let him work his magic, $120 worth to be exact. He was able to get the bass to a very playable condition. It now has proper intonation and reasonable action after some heat treatment, a lot of elbow grease and a fresh set of Roto 77 flats (.40-.90). He reports that the truss rod turns OK.

The neck is quite nice for a 50 year old bass. Tone is woody and old-school, think Jack Bruce. The pickup selector works and the pots are quiet. Output level is on par with a modern passive bass. There is a little bit of hum but to me it is not excessive and it mutes when you roll off the tone a bit.

Looks like this baby spent most of its life in a closet. The finish has a few small areas of flaking of the topcoat (see photos), nothing heinous, and no big dings. The most obvious cosmetic flaws are a ding and tool mark on the bridge cover, and a missing metal piece from one of the tone knobs. Frets show slight wear. Headstock is pristine. Tuners work well. There is a foam mute under the bridge cover; despite this, the body feels resonant.

On to the photos:

Cool bass, huh? First $350 gets her! That includes shipping. Please add $15 for shipping east of Denver. (I am in SoCal.) PayPal is fine. I will ship in a basic black guitar gig bag that's about 2" too short, and include a nice embossed leather strap. Careful packing, of course!

Thanks for looking. Please PM with purchase offers or questions. No trades at this time, I am overbassed as it is!!

Some nibbling but still available! My instructor was here yesterday and got some great old-school sounds out of this puppy. Fast neck after the pro setup. Thumpy tone with authority. Extremely cool looks. Fifty years young, give or take, and still going strong.

I also have the beat-up chipboard case with webbed cloth handle. Pretty funky!! Resolve to try vintage short scale in 2013!
