SOLD!
I just recently got this because 1.) I got a great deal on it, which I'm now passing on, and 2.) because I've been super curious about these for years and you just don't see them pop up too often.
This is a late 90's model, but is in excellent condition. A couple dings (pictured below), but nothing anyone would see while playing the bass or seeing someone play the bass, and the neck is perfect (I'm super particular about not having any dings where I can feel them when I play, like the back of the neck).
Weighs only 8.8 pounds! That's light for a Smith! I've installed Dunlop dual buttons, which I'm also throwing in. The original buttons are included. 34" scale, standard 18mm Smith spacing.
Everything works great. Three band preamp with passive bypass. As you can see, there's little or no fret wear, so whomever owned this before me babied the crap out of it. The neck is perfect and takes a ridiculous setup. The tone is a cross between a J bass and the usual Smith tone. Basically much fatter than the soapbar models. It's got a really great aggression to it and the B is strong and focused. You will not be disappointed!
I'm selling basically because, while this really is a great bass from both a tone as well as playability standpoint, I'm sticking with what I have for now in J basses.
The new price on these is crazy, like almost 4K!! I'd let this go for $1650 SHIPPED, and PAYPAL'd (lower 48) WITH the hard case, which is also in excellent condition. No muss, no fuss, to your door, one number, done. Sorry, but at this time, no trades. I figure this will sell easily enough without having to go that route. Need to recover some funds.
