Hi TB. This is a very, very cool bass. Discontinued by Lakland, so not particularly easy to come by. Throaty, growly, punchy, thumpy...it somehow manages all of that. I have a custom order nearing its completion so I sadly need to pass this bass along.
Excellent condition...I don't see any obvious dings or dents on the sweet gold finish. The only scratch I see is on the neck pickup, and that's caused by and pretty much covered by strings. Easily fixable if the scratch bothers you that much, but probably not worth the time or effort...it's that unsubstantial.
Currently strung up with TI flats...and it'll ship to you that way
Comes with original papers and hardshell case as well.
I need $850 + shipping out of this bass.
B/c I need the money, I probably won't be too willing to trade, unless it's something really cool. You know what? Run it by me, ya never know No offer will be ignored, but ridiculous offers will be shared with TB for public amusement...fair warning has been issued good people.
Pictures and weight to be added and reported tomorrow.
PICUTRES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pictures by cfclef - Photobucket
WEIGHT: Comes in at 8.5 on my digital scale. That's pretty good!!
EDIT:
Here's TB's own Ian Allison (fantastic bass player and very, very nice guy) playing a bevy of clips using a Scheff bass. Welcome to Lakland
*******************
EDIT#2:
I looked the bass over very carefully, and I saw *one* scuff, sort of a darkish mark the size of a pinhead on the upper horn. This could very well be a finishing issue and will more than likely come off with some cleaning solution. I am not going to touch the bass though. I couldn't even get it to photograph, though I tried several times (there's one picture that kind of sort of shows it a little). Other than that, awesome shape save for typical player swirl marks. Also, the papers that I thought were the originals were in fact something else...so I don't have those, I apologize. Minor issues, but important for full disclosure. Thanks.

YOU'LL LIKE IT. Remember that sick, sick bassist from the clips? Here are his written thoughts on the bass' sound: Sound : 10
How does it sound? . . . this is the most difficult bass to describe tonally for me. First of all, I was skeptical when I first saw this bass. Frankly, those lipstick pickups scared the $%^& out of me! Give me Lindys, EMGs, Barts, Nords, whatever - but those lipstick tubes . . . aren't those found on basses that sell for around $250? Aren't they invalid for professional use? Aren't they cheesy as hell?
NO!
Although Lakland markets the Jerry Scheff like an updated Danelectro Longhorn, it has MUCH more to offer. Since I'm not very familiar with Danos, I wasn't sure what to think - and this was probably good going in. But I loved Laklands (still do), so I thought I'd give it a shot.
Aaaaanndd . . . it's WONDERFUL. Wonderful for what? For all kinds of things - rock, country, pop, metal, etc. It just depends on what you like to hear, really!
BUT - let's see if I can tanglibly describe sound . . . OK - blended in the middle, it kind of has this snarly, open, punchy crunch with a pick - or tubby goodness with fingers - almost Rickenbacker-ish - but better (and better built). The bridge pickup is very J-like and the neck pickup is P-like. It really does the P AND J thing pretty well actually. But it has a VOICE - for certain. Any pickup selection still maintains this bass's voice. I don't want to use the word "hollow," because I feel that it's a loaded word. Because to me, "hollow" usually denotes "thin." And this bass is FAR from thin. It's hollow like a Rickenbacker should be! That's what I thought from the get go - and I actually sold my 4001 to purchase this bass.
The best way I can describe it is that it seems to have this peaky hollow bark in the midrange that moves almost like a parametric EQ or envelope filter when you move your hand into different playing positions. For example, when you're over the bridge pickup plucking strongly, it barks like a Jazz bass with a 2K (or so) bump. But as you move your hand or vary your attack, that midrange bump seems to move - like an envelope filter - so when you have your hand over the neck pickup plucking lightly, the bump is more like 800-1K. I hope this makes some kind of sense. And I realize that ALL basses do this to some extent, but this one really accentuates YOUR tone - the tone from your hands.
Bring in the EQ and you have this BIG snarling Jazz-ish (bridge), Rick-ish (middle) OR P-ish (neck) tone that still maintains it's own unique and very useful voice.
All I know is that I've used this bass on several recording sessions as of late and it ALWAYS draws attention in the right ways. It seems to stick out in a mix when you want it to, or settle right down when you want it to. It's all about your hands.
I'm playing it with rounds at the moment, but I've heard that this bass mates beautifully with Thomastik-Infeld flats. I think I'll give that a try next. |

I think it sounds tremendous. Low mid and low treble heavy...makes for a really awesome sound, especially with TI flats (perfectly suited to bring out the best in those pickups). I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with it. |

The bass just has that classic look that we all crave whilst be as tonally diverse as some boutique offerings and, don't forget, this bass is made by Lakland - you, imo, do not get better production quality as high as this from any other company, I mean just look at how much this thing weighs, look at how dark the rosewood is! This would be mine if I hadn't just grabbed one and the bass is strung up with TI's; once again, I've played this bass and words can't describe it. It does the P-bass thing, it does the Jazz bass thing and it does the Rickenbacker thing that we all crave (only with better production quality) - the necks on these rock, as well as the pickups; you're never going to look at lipsticks the same way again. Somebody is going to get a heck of a bass at this price, especially since the case and TI's are included.
Constantine is a real good, honest cat to deal with (I have, multiple times). |

OMG! a whole other sonic universe to add to the already diverse sounds this bass is capable of. set the mid selector to 250 ( it's on 500 standard) and boost the mids. this boosts low mids. the hollow mids completely reverse and this thing sounds like what i think a warwick p bass would sound like. attitude city! punching, growling and barking, baby! by far the most versatile bass i've ever had. and i've had alot!!! |
