Just wanted to mention that while this side by side configuration may be a "first" there's been basses with hybrid fretted/fretless necks in the past.

Kramer offered it as a fingerboard option in the 80s, fretted to the 9th fret, fretless above that.

There was also some crazy neck design where the frets retracted into the neck, I forget who came out with that.

Still this Ibanez is a cool bass.

Status-Graphite still offers a Fretted/Fretless option.

I have one...

One of the coolest basses I've played...

I believe it's the only Ibanez 6 stringer that has a 34" scale and 19mm string spacing at the bridge (since that's what most 4 stringers are). At some point in the future, I'm thinking of picking one up, fretting the whole board, and reworking the pickups so it's a fretted 6er. Doing all this would still be less expensive than custom ordering a 6er with a 34 scale and the desired string spacing.

Bump
I wish the pickups in these Ashulas were available aftermarket. They sound really cool. Good ballsy tone. I'd love to put some in my Jaguar.

I've seen a few old Ibanez Musician basses like that as well. Brown's Guitar Factory makes one like that, too, with a Kahler trem, even.
