Bass now has the original (factory) Fender bridge mounted instead of the Bad Ass II pictured!
She was supposed to sell local today, but the buyer had to work and I've tried contacting him and have not heard back from him. I had it on hold for him. He has first dibbs still if he gets back to me, but if any others here are interested, PM me now to get in line in case that falls through. Really hoping he gets back to me as he seems like a cool TBer and I'd love to keep her local just in case he decides to sell her down the road and I can afford to get my baby back!
This is NOT a reissue. This is a real USA made 1977 Fender Jazz (all parts including neck, body, pickups, pots, etc date to 1977). This is the same year and era of Marcus Miller’s w/o the pre-amp that Roger Sadowsky installed back in the day (this bass is NOT the current Fender Marcus Miller reissue but a REAL 1977 Jazz like Marcus's main bass) . As I recall, the serial # is fairly close to Marcus's '77 as well.
I'm going to give a very, VERY detailed description of this bass below. This is something that the vast majority of sellers don't do. Rest assured that this bass is in overall GREAT cosmetic condition and also plays like a dream (low, butter smooth action) and sounds GREAT. This bass is RIGHT!
Very low action, very straight neck. Really does play like a dream. She's pretty light too for a 70's era ash bodied J. I'm guessing about 9 lbs, but I can weigh her later.
As you can see, the body looks like a one piece (which is extremely rare), but it's actually a very, very well matched two piece. Probably the best matching I've seen ever.
The factory original frets still have plenty of life. Now to the electronics. Pickups wire and pots are "original" (sort of). The pickups were a but thin sounding when I got her, so I sent them off to the famous Lindy Fralin to be checked (info ---
http://www.fralinpickups.com/rewind_repair.asp ) . The factory 1977 Alnico magnets tested great, but the coils needed a rewinding. So he re-wound them to vintage spec with vintage new/old stock wire and have been wax potted. They sound amazing now. So the only thing not original on the pickups is the wire itself, but the wire is vintage wire, so consider the pups more or less original, but fully serviced and good to go for another 30+ years.
Pickup leads, pots, input jack are all original. Everything else on the bass is also original with the exception of the bridge,
but I have put the original bridge on in place of the Leo Quann Bad Ass II since taking the pictures! The original pickguard even has a Fender sticker underneath with the serial number that matches the headstock.
So now, I'm going to pick the bass apart in GREAT detail below. Something that most here don't do. Again, overall she's in GREAT shape for a '77!!! Anyway, here comes very detailed decription of any wear, flaws, etc...
Minor items to note. Somebody had an extra string tee for the A string but the little hole was filled. There was a small surface crack on the fretboard (purely cosmetic and no functional or structural issue) that has also been filled and repaired). There is a small crack in the first inlay, but that too is cosmetic and the inlay is sound! On the lower side of the neck, the binding has two small areas that have extremely pieces missing but you can't feel them when playing. There is checking and surface cracks in the poly coat of the bass, but that's totally normal for a Fender of this age. Neck pocket has a small crack in the finish (also normal for a Fender of this age). None of the above items are structural or functional issues. Just cosmetic / age items that are pretty normal. Original hardshell case. All hinges and latches are fully functional. No functional issues (there are some tears in the tolex covering, but the wood underneath and case is structurally sound). Bass fits nice and snug in the case!
Pictured below shows thin crack in the poly finish but this is NOT in the wood! Picture also shows that I've utilized the micro-tilt mechanism to get the correct neck angle for low action. Neck is straight and true and no
"slippage" (neck stays in place in pocket)!
This is literally the best playing 70's era Jazz I've put my hands on. The bass kills! Price?
MASSIVE price drop to just $1699 FIRM
(I was asking nearly $2k and even had lots of interest at that price)!!! No trades at this time. Something like this would likely sell on Evil Bay for $2500+ Pictures ---
