MIJ MOON BASS JJ in CANDY APPLE RED w/ matching Headstock and synth setup!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Folks, (apologies for the long post, please bear with me)****SOLD***SOLD***SOLD**

I have some bills I'd like to play, so I am going to try and sell some things that don't get enough attention.

This is an interesting one...

An early 90's Moon Bass made in japan by what some people call "the Sadowsky of japan". Whether or not you agree with that statement, Moon basses are top notch and are made with supreme quality. They are hand made and the attention to detail shows....and this one is even nicer than that!

This was a one-off job that the Moon folks executed...supposedly for Darryl Jones, although I never bothered to check if this was true....maybe the next owner can. Regardless, still a great bass!

Specs:
Body: Ash, full sized, Candy Apple Red
Neck: Maple w/ Rosewood fingerboard. Very slim C shape,
super comfortable. Neck finished in a very fast satin
Bridge: Schaller roller
Hardware: Black
Preamp: Bartolini TBT
Pickups: Bartolini J's
Tuners: reverse Kluson style
Weight: 9 lbs. 4oz.

Moon basses have the most super comfy necks. They are hand made, and strive to imitate a 62 Jazz bass profile. Finished in a satin that is like butta, fretwork is impeccable.

Now for the bonus! the bass has a full synth setup on it
There are overlays on the fretboard and small sensors on the frets, all feeding into a small 15 pin control panel on the rear. The hex sensors for the synth are below the bridge pickup.

A little research has shown me that this technology was introduced on Wal basses, but was later bought by Peavey to use on their Midi Bass and Cyber bass series. The idea here with the sensors was to achieve the smallest amount of latency between when you strike the string, and when the actual sound is produced. Apparantly this was breakthrough technology as well... I am pretty sure by the looks of it that this is a Wal setup or damn near close a ripoff as one could get! read about it here and check out some of the photos..scroll down to Wal MB4 Midi bass
Wal oddities & rarities

I must admit, I have not tried the synth, nor do I have any other connectors and such for it. The bass was an impulse buy for me, and has sat largely unused, except for a few rehearsals. The bass sounds great, very articulate, with just enough J bass grind. I was actually suprised to hear this sound coming from Bartolini's...very even tone across all 4 strings as well.

The bass has had very moderate play wear and has been setup well, with a medium to low action. Bass will ship in a beatup mid sixties Fender USA jazz bass case.

Please excuse these pictures...I cannot capture the red correctly. everyone who sees the bass comments on how rich the finish is...I just think these pics do not do justice.

As I do not know how the synth works, but seeing as how the bass plays fantastic and sounds good, I am going to offer this up on the cheap.

950 shipped 835.00 shipped!to your door in these lower 48 states....but feel free to make me an offer. Elsewhere in the world, contact me and we can see what we can work out...PM is best....and onto the pics

Ah, I thought I recognised this system. Steve Chick bought one of these around to where I was living to demo in around 1986, I think. At that stage the synth module was about the size of a bar fridge!

It worked pretty well, as I recall.

Here is a pic of the wiring done for the sensors on the neck. Excellent craftmanship

Guys, great bass here! Moon basses are fantastic finds, and not really common in the States.

Can you explain why the frets are segmented?
The board looks more like ebony than rosewood.
Pretty bass, good luck.

EDIT: I didn't read correctly it's because of synth sensors.

They aren't segmented, those are MIDI signal transmitters.

It actually is Rosewood....underneath the overlays. There are composite overlays on the fretboard. Look closely at some of the pics of the board and you can see it. It is so well done, you don't even notice it when you play.

Shamus, just in case no-one has pointed this out to you yet, the Japanese writing on the neck heel and in the neck pocket seems to confirm that this is indeed a bass made for Darryl Jones. Both say:
HHI-27 (model no.?)
Darryl Jones (Da-ri-ru Jyo-o-n-zu)
Moon (Mu-u-n)

Good luck with the sale.

Whoa! Dude, much appreciated...I was told this was made for Darryl, but you know, take everything with a grain of salt, I say. Moon basses are absolutely top notch, so I bought the bass on its own merit, not by its previous owner. Still, it's cool to find that out...many thanks for the info!
