Modulus Genesis 5 / J-J / $1075 Shipped

SOLD!

Snagged this when MARS went out of business, sold it, and then (somehow) it made its way back into my stable of five bangers. Looks really nice in my guitar rack but not seeing much gig time.

This is a 2001 and served as a wall-hung demo unit until MARS went belly-up and blew out all their remaining gear. It has the bumps 'n bruises to reflect that but nothing that affects playability. From my understanding, this particular Gen 5 is one of the lighter ones at 9.3 lbs. I couldn't begin to tell you what the body and neck woods are although the top is obviously quilted maple. One of the original tuners was bent at time of acquisition so I replaced all 5 with Hipshot Ultralite 3/8" Y tuner. Also sports the original Bart / Bart harness with volume, blend, mid, and stacked treble / bass. The neck is very stable as you would imagine but the truss rod works flawlessly for those who like to tweak the relief. Comes with the original hardshell case in good condition.

The blems are concentrated primarily near the lower bouts with one on the face of the lower horn which is difficult to photograph. If you need addt'l photos, please PM me. Asking $1075 shipped / insured in the lower 48. I installed new strings not long ago and will double-check / tweak the set-up before boxing her up. No trades at this time (or so he says!). Please PM me with any questions.

I can even bring it by your house for a demonstration! Hey, I'll even shave off the shipping costs rolled into the price.

I'm pretty much bassed-out at the moment but need to cop one of those huge mambo rolling PA racks down at Alpha.

...cuz then it would look pretty stupid with an extra tuner hanging off the headstock. D'oh! It has to do with the ongoing quest for the "perfect" B string. In terms of dimension, this is the biggest fiver I've ever owned. Look at the juxtaposition of the J pups against the body face.

You're in Charlottesville, too. What a shame. We could've met just west of Richmond. Or better yet, we have a branch (Roberts Home Medical) in Charlottesville.

Got one myself 99 and had the audere 3bz preamp in it which really brought it to life. May look to drop in Aero pickups in down the road. Unless i can find a set of LP's

Bump for an awesome bass!

Out of curiosity, what are the pickup widths?

90 and 93 mm or 3 9/16" and 3 11/16". Narrower than the stock Fender-esque J pairs. If you plan on swapping out the pups and/or elex., do your homework first. I always considered Barts to be a "safe bet" on any instrument. They're fairly predictable even though they may not be everybody's favorite. The Gen 5 would be a great platform for upgrades / mods if you swing that direction.

I don't like maple fretboard. At all.
This is the first time I would have made an exception to the rule.
Great bass good luck with the sale

didn't Michael Tobias have a hand in designing these?

they look a lot like the MTD US Saratoga's

Yes, these are a Michael Tobias design...even says so on the truss rod plate. Not sure exactly how he contributed (body shape?) but the finished product is fairly compelling.

The neck is very stable. It's essentially a composite spine with wood inlays which see significantly less compression than a comparable wood neck. The truss rod is very sensitive / reactive and, once adusted to taste, will hold the relief until you decide to change it, i.e string type, varying gauges, etc. Ideal for those bouncing back 'n forth betweenst inside / climate controlled environments and the unrelenting heat (or cold) of outdoor engagements.

I'm in no hurry to move it, but given the interest, I wouldn't be surprised to see her gone by the end of the week. To reiterate: this piece is not in mint condition. Upon closer inspection, I also found a small pinhead sized clearcoat dent on the neck itself. You can't feel it when playing but it's there. If you obsess about an instrument's condition, this is not the deal for you. I will, however, offer right-of-refusal for the purchaser with a 48 hr approval period. All I can say is the Gen 5 is in the same shape or better than when I acquired it.

Is this a 9 or 18-volt system?

18 v / two 9 v batteries. The neck appears to be of a consistent thickness treble side / bass side.

I'll take your word on it. I can't tell by feel or by eyeballing it, either. It's a very comfortable neck, nonetheless.
