Hi Folks,
Catch me before I find my sanity. Up for sale is my amazing MTD 535. Ash body, walnut top, maple neck & fingerboard. Serial # 1693. The bass was purchased new in August 2008 from Gelb Music in Redwood City, CA. It's in excellent condition and includes the original HSC. Terms & Info
For sale only, price is firm @ $2,950. Shipping will be on your dime. As usual, preference given for local buyers with cash-in-hand. Why am I selling?
If you ask my friends (and Ed @ Gelb), because I'm nuts. Realistically, there are two reasons. First, the bass has just been sitting. It was on four gigs in 2008 and three in 2009. My "policy" is if an instrument sits, it needs to go. Second, I'm jonesing for a certain Sadowsky. So, it's the sell-one-bass-to-fund-another game.
When I bought, I was doing a lot of modern-ish jazz, R&B, & singer-songwriter hits that really were perfect for this bass. These days, not so much, unfortunately. I also have a similar 635 which I tend to use when those gigs do arise. This bass really does sound amazing, with very warm and fat lows & lower mids to go along with the typical MTD hi-fi/crispness. It's also rather easy on the eyes. Pixels & mp3's

There we have it. Thanks for your time....let's close this deal. |

That is a beautiful bass. It has one of the best-looking walnut tops I've ever seen on an MTD. I'm not sure if I should be wishing you luck with the sale or not... |

First off, as a friend of said crazy TB'er, I can attest to the fact that this guy is the real deal. He knows his basses, and he's a stand up cat who you can trust with your life. No...not my life...yours. :-) Just kidding! Really, you won't find a better guy on TB to deal with.
Secondly, this bass is one of the most special MTD's I've played. Even better than my beloved similar MTD with an ash neck. This is not one of those situations where the guy selling really owns a crappy bass but is trying to tell everyone "it just doesn't get gigged enough, even though it's the best bass on the planet" just so he can move it. This bass is a monster, and Vroom just has enough basses in his arsenal that he is going to experience some tonal overlap, so this is the unfortunate victim to his harem of basses all sounding so damn good.
Score this one while you can.

Riis | I agree... that REALLY looks like an ash neck to me... and IMHO, that's a GOOD thing! I also have an ash/walnut ash/maple MTD 535 and it's my all time fave so far. |

Wow...I'm surprised at the interest (no complaints, honest!). For clarification, it's undoubtedly a maple neck. I had a bit of the same confusion myself when playing this bass in the store. Once seen up close, especially compared to an ash-necked MTD, the distinction is clear.
One of the reasons this one is for sale is that there is some sonic duplication with my ash-necked 635. However, that one really is a different animal, and the ash neck certainly seems to factor in to what makes it unique. So, while I agree that an ash neck is indeed a good thing, there's no doubting the tonal character of this 535...it truly is a beast.
Thanks to my cronies for the bumps! No official sale as yet, but there does seem to be a pecking order via PM, and there is a local fellow coming by this afternoon. Timing is a bit tight as I have a gig down in Santa Cruz tonight (meaning: long drive there & back), but I promise that if the bass doesn't sell today I'll get back in touch with the PMers ASAP. Thanks again, folks! |
