MTD 635-24 Black Limba body/blackened redwood top, maple neck/ebony board

Sign in to disble this ad
After a few days of playing this wonderful bass, I think an ash neck, ash bodied MTD would suit me better. As it is, the warm punch that this bass has built in is better covered by my main bass, a Sadowsky alder/rw PJ5 with flats. This MTD has more Low mid punch than some other wood combos I"ve owned, and IMO is one of the best combos for fingerstyle that I've heard to date.

Here's some pics of mine:

And a link from the previous owner's FS thread:

FS/FT MTD USA 635-24 Blackened Redwood Burl/Black Limba/Striped Ebony

I'm looking for a cash sale to fund an ash/ash/ROTM topped 635-24 that recently became available to me, so unless someone has something in a similar wood combo (such as a walnut top!!!!! ) this is FOR SALE ONLY!!!!

$3200 shipped an paypal'd anywhere in the US

I saw that bass and while I'm sure it's smoking I'm after the same ash/ash combo that your mentioned in your thread. I have the warm/thick thing covered. Thanks though.

Thanks! These are some of the most touch-sensitive, bad-technique-revealing basses out there. If you can control that, literally anythingyou want to play comes out effortlessly. The bass gets out of your way.

With therapy I've curbed such impulses!

I've got it narrowed down to a Sadowsky PJ5 as my main bass, a Modulus Quantum as my fretless, and hopefully an ash/ash/? MTD 635-24 as my backup funk stick. And then I'll sell every bit of it and get into antique tin whistles.....

For those who have never owned/played a USA MTD, these instruments are THE best going for playing chords. Don't know if it's the build quality or the Buzz Feiten tuning system, but everything from 1st position low note chords to upper register clusters is PERFECTLY in tune. It's eery actually.

So this must be a pretty dark bass? Especially if you're comparing it to alder/rosewood w/flats. I though the ebony might brighten it up a bit, but bartolinis are pretty dark...so perhaps they tone down the brightness of the ebony quite a bit.

It's a beautiful bass, so tempting. I've always found bartolinis muffled compared to the sound of Fender single coils or EMG's but I'd love to be shown otherwise.

Not exactly dark. And I wouldn't say my Sadowsky is dark either. Just incredibly thick in the low mid region in both basses, except the Sadowsky has an even bigger sound across the fretboard. You're right that the ebony board imparts it's usual sheen and gloss to each note.

And IME all MTD's are bright and punchy inherently because of the Bart Pups and EQ. This setup is tailored exactly to Mike's specs and can be VERY bright and modern with minimal EQ'ing. And having had several MTD's now in different configs (mahogany/maple board, ash/wenge neck/board, tulipwood/myrtle and wenge neck/board, ash/myrtle maple/maple neck, korina body wenge neck) I can REALLY hear how the wood changes things.

I've played a few ash neck/maple board basses with different bodies/tops, and they all had this explosive quality to each note and could be VERY aggressive when needed, which is a sound I find I'm needing on some gigs that the alder/rw PJ5 doesn't do easily. Plus I like leaving that bass with flats. It just works on that bass.

I'll get some clips up of this bass soon so you can hear what I'm talking about.

Here's some off the cuff looping/wanking. The beginning harmonics groove is with the bass set as follows: bass/treble maxed, midrange 90% at 1k setting, back pickup only

When the bassline comes in I'm dialing just the neck pup with the following EQ settings:
Bass maxed, treble flat, mids boosted 75% at low mid (250hz) setting

The rest of it is done with the pickups centered, bass maxed, treble flat, and mids boosted at middle setting (don't know frequency right off, think it's 500hz)

The Sadowsky PJ5 is a keeper/from-my-cold-dead-hands bass, as is the new Modulus fretless. What you're seeing now is a search for 'The One' as far as MTD's go. The idea being as follows:

Sadowsky w/flats for 90% of my fingerstyle stuff: big, fat Modern Jamerson tone

Modulus Fretless for THAT sound

MTD for everything bright and modern: slap, newish R&B fingerstyle

And then the gut-strung upright for my inner Paul Chambers.

Thanks.......that was therapeutic!!!!
