TRADED!
This was another "rescued" Pre-EB Musicman Sabre (can't help myself). It was a Musicman employee made custom. Not sure if it was bought in 1979 or if the parts were purchased (or otherwise procured) after the company was bought. I live about 15 minutes from the Fullerton factory, so there are lots of Musicman pre-EB parts and parts basses to be found locally, many from previous MM employees.
All of the stamps/markings have been sanded out, but this is definitely a 1979 ish bass since the three-bolt rosewood board neck was phased out in 1979. This neck has the 1.5" nut and is very Jazz-esque. The body is a slab body (no contours) - this was never offered on the Sabre. The pin router marks and all cavities (as well as threaded insert placements) are era correct (I have compared it against many other Sabres). The preamp and bridge (C00 serial) are era correct but they were taken from another bass. There are some extra bridge holes underneath from the previous owner trying several Fender style bridges on it. Pickups are G&L MFD's (practically identical in spec to the original Sabre pickups) that are in new EB Sabre closed covers (which are no longer available from EB).
When I got this bass, the finish was just an ugly oil finish - had Pat Wilkins do a cleanup and respray in clear to show off that beautiful northern ash. Neck was in great shape so I left it alone, but I did have it refretted. All wiring/work/setup was profesionally done. Bass plays beautifully and sounds absolutely killer. Action is low and neck is fast. Weight is 10.2 lbs but it balances perfectly seated or strapped on. The Schaller tuners are new as are the Dunlop strap pins. Bass came with a 70's leather (pleather?) gig bag.
