Bought this as another relic project and backup bass.

This is an OLP MM3 5-string bass (Officially Licensed Product from Ernie Ball)

The goal 'vibe' for this project was to give the OLP the vibe of an SR5 that has been gigged quite a bit and upgraded over time. Small dings and wear and scuffs, but not the typical unrealistic sanded off area. The neck has some intentional darkened wear marks between the strings, dings, rubs, scuffs, bumps, etc etc etc. The photo's do justice to the color of the finish and the condition of the bass. I try my best to undersell the condition of things I sell rather than try to hide issues.

The bass plays and sounds fantastic. I love the meaty Sade bass tone, and this pulls it off great with the tone rolled off... or it can go very aggressive with the treble in the center detent position. The high end on the Glockenklang preamps are super glassy and modern sounding and the low end is meaty and tight.

The bass currently has Ernie Ball slinkies on it. I can ship it with those, or Dunlop Nickles or Stainless, or D'addario XL's on it. Your choice.

Bass will ship in a padded soft case inside a well padded box that I've received it in. Unless the buyer would prefer something different.

The good:

Stock pickup replaced with Nordstrand MM 5.2 pickup - $115
(altered route for new style MM pickup design still shows a bit of the original 3-ear holes on pickugard on sides of pickup, but not much)

Added Glockenklang 2-band active/passive preamp with passive tone control. (super glassy high end on this and thick meaty lows.) - $145

3-way miniswitch wired parallel / single coil / series

Controls:
Switch is parallel / single / series
Vol ( pull for passive)
Bass
Treble. (passive rolloff if in passive mode

Fully copper shielded cavity

Black pickguard (spray painted original Tort pickguard. If you'd prefer tort... just strip the black paint)

Smooth working aftermarket tuners. The OLP tuners had a tendency to be stiff and jerky

5-string string retainer tree (black) not shown in photos.

Black domed knobs from Best Bass Gear

Transparent Orange/Red finish showing the flamed maple top (has some visual movement to the flame) The finish is satin and has been knocked down further with multiple 0000 steel wool treatments. This is not a shiny super glossy finish. It's supposed to look old and used and hand done.

Neck had a full Fret Leveling and recrowning. The action is good and smooth and plays great.

Musicman style Oil Wax finish on back of neck (very smooth)

9.2 lbs

(The sticker on the back is on top of the finish and can be peeled off easily if the buyer prefers with no damage to the finish)

Has the true style MM bridge with the two side bolts. I added a separate bridge ground wire when I rewired the bass, as the existing bridge ground seemed thin, frayed and 'iffy' at best. That ground is under under the bridge as with most basses.

The questionable or Bad:

Yes, this has had the OLP headstock logo removed and replaced with a Musicman SR5 replica. Back of the headstock, and neck place still proudly display it's OLP heritage. I'm not trying to pass this off as a true SR5.

Ugly rabid beaver routing under the pickguard.

Due to the body being incredibly light I actually "added" lead weight to the body cavity to balance the bass better. Weight is epoxied under the copper shielding and isn't visible when pickguard is removed. The bass weighs 9.2 lbs including the added weight.

The head of the set screw on one the treble dome knob is half gone. It's still removable, but would be best replaced ($8 from Best Bass Gear)

I have not gotten around to routing a battery compartment in the back for this, so you have to remove most of the pickguard screws to replace the battery. It's tight in the compartment, but all the pots and connections are wrapped with tape, or shrink tubed, so there's no problem with wire touching or such. Just don't get to abusive jamming things around in there. ( No reason to need to change a battery more than every 6 months unless you leave you cable plugged into the bass ) I'll put a new Duracell ProCell 9v in it before I ship it.

$375 shipped payed via paypal. No trades needed.

That is a SWEET looking bass. A little more than I could spend at this time though!

Thx, I like doing a project like this once a year or so when possible. Very happy with this one visually and tonally. Now that I have my big al 5 I'm only using it and trust it enough to only take it to local gigs.

Neither am I but I also agree. This is really tastefully done.

Thanks. I feel that most 'relic's' focus in to much on the played to the extreme end of things. There's a lot of character that happens to instruments that are played and loved. Some by accident and often some by the decision of the player via repaints and such. That's kind of where this one falls.

Oh, and this does have a few coats of nitro satin clear-coat over top of the trans Orange/Red that's also been matted with some 0000 steel wool. It's all cured and 'non-stinky'.

Adding weight for the balance, brilliant! I have owned several of these and that was a problem. Plus switching out the tuners and the preamp and pickups, very cool! The necks on these always were the best part. Great job!

That's a super nice mod job. Wish I could take it off your hands, but gotta pay bills. Somebody's gonna get an awesome bass at a great price!

Awesome bass!

I'm actually trying to pull something similar with my OLP MM3

But I'm having a hard time making the extra space for the preamp =/
