Pull up a chair, folks, and listen to the long, sad saga of an attractive young girl gone wrong.
This began life as a sample no-name bass I received from a Chinese manufacturer, a SR505 lookalike with passive pickups.
But because of poor pickups and pots, and unsatisfactory finish, I decided to use it as a platform for a project bass.
I did the unconventional refinish job, and it turned out pretty well, except for a couple bonehead moves on my part which marred the back in a few places, as seen in the pictures.
To upgrade the components, I bought a new passive harness with Vol-Blend-Tone-Tone pots from bestbassgear.com, and a couple new Mighty Mite pickups.
Alas, I'm no wiz at the electronics part, and after soldering everything as I thought it should be, I get nothing from the bass. So obviously something isn't right. (I did also use a wire cap in one place to join the wires).
So rather than throw more time and money into this, I'll put it up here, because I imagine this is just the kind of project some of you will relish.
Pros:
Mahogany body
Weighs 8.5 pounds
New pickups and pots
Unique paint scheme
Neck is pretty nice
Cons:
Doesn't work currently
Finish flaws on back and in jack hole(the latter easily touched up with some flat black paint).
Somehow the nut and washer from one of the tuners disappeared, so I replaced it with a gold nut
Action is quite high right now, I didn't adjust
Some of the pots seem to turn hard, but that may because I tighted the nuts too much?
A few body "ripples" in the pickup to bridge area.
I won't be including the $55 tapewound strings, so it will be shipped with the neck off and no strings
I'm asking $125 plus shipping for this. It will be sold as-is, and accordingly there is some risk on your part. This won't come close to recovering what I've put into it, but my loss is your gain, hopefully.
