Rare 34" Lakland 55-94 (54-94) built by Carl Pedigo

Sign in to disble this ad
I purchased this looking for something that would help my aching left hand. I've been playing a Lakland DJ5 for the past few years and thought a 34" scale would be better for the pain. As much as I really like this bass, I ended up going with a 34' scale but with 18mm string spacing, so momma says this has to go. I got this from Hollow Man so here is the original thread:

Rare Bird: 34" scale Lakland 55-94 (54-94) built by Carl Pedigo

A 34" scale Lakland 5-string is pretty rare and this one even has a color that's unique!

The story as told by Hollow Man is:

"So last year, for some stupid reason, I decided to email Dan Lakin and ask him why he wouldn't build a 34" scale 5'er (this is before he sold the company). Everyone knew he wouldn't do it; I guess I just wanted to hear it for myself. I was surprised when he came back and, rather than giving me a flat 'No', he suggested I contact Carl Pedigo, former master luthier at Lakland who started doing his own custom builds. When I contacted Carl, he told me that he was authorized by Lakland to build custom Laklands under the full factory warranty... basically, he was (and as far as I know, still is) a functional Lakland custom shop! Anyway, he was psyched to build a 34" 55-94, which is technically called a 54-94 due to the adjusted scale length. We used Lakland LH-3 pickups and passive electronics, and Carl even talked me into doing a three-volume approach: one for the neck pickup, one for the forward (neck) coil on the MM pickup, and one for the rear (bridge) coil on the MM pickup (and also a passive tone control). The result is the most tonally flexible passive Lakland ever! It's amazing to hear the variety of tones you can get by tweaking the exact ratios of each coil. The finish was an idea I had that came out perfectly; it's a deep blue that transitions into a vibrant amber, and the transition leaves a gorgeous teal ring between the two."

The specs:
ash body, maple neck, quilted maple top
light birdseye maple fingerboard
three-tone "Jamaica Burst" (Carl's term) finish
34" scale, 19mm string spacing
1 7/8" nut
stock Lakland LH-3 pickups
passive vol-vol-vol-passive tone electronics
string-thru bridge or body
extremely light, between 8-8.5lbs
Dunlop Dual-Design Straplocks

There are no nicks, dents, or blemishes anywhere so I would consider it like new. I have more photos on request.

I'm looking for $2400 shipped CONUS and not looking for any trades at this time. The bass will ship in a very nice Lakland gig bag. Thanks for looking!!

Man, that's beautiful. I love my 35" Lakies - I'm sure this is repeating an often asked queston: How is the low B on this bass compared to a Lakland 35" scale bass?

Disclaimer: I'm gassing severely, but by budget for new basses is just as severely limited, so I'm not a potential buyer. I'm just drooling on the side lines.

As the original (and only other) owner of this bass, I'd say it's virtually identical. You'd never know the difference in even the softest of mixes.

This thing is sick! When mine sells I might be in touch on this. Although I have my eye on a Pedulla.

Carl Pedigo and i were discussing this bass the other day, he said the coloring was supposed to represent a tropical island and the water color around the island as the water got deeper....gave me a new appreciation for the color scheme!

Yeah, he told me that too... IIRC, he dubbed it 'Jamaica Burst'.

I'm still lovin' the Scheff, Basspraiser. Last Saturday at a gig I played my DPLE II the first set, and it sounded so good... then for the second set I played the Scheff and I just said AAAAhhhhhhh....
It's just amazing.

Bovinehost used to own it, and on more than one occasion he's said it's one he regretted that he let it get away. I don't ever want to feel those feelings. At least not for the 5 or so years I've owned it. Not yet.

If I ever decide to part with it you're on the short list of folks I'll be sure to notify. If you're ever in my neck of the woods, come by and play it.

Bump. I had conversations with Carl Pedigo last spring about doing a different take on the Lakland-based 34" 5-string. I've instead decided to stick with the Sadowsky 5-24, which works well for me, but I suspect this is a fantastic axe.

This makes it official. Kevin, I enjoyed talking with you this afternoon and look forward to getting that beautiful bass in my hands. I await your PayPal info. Hollow Man, I hope you're getting your financial situation under control. I must thank you for having it commissioned by Carl Pedigo and then passing it on. I look forward to being it's third owner.

Thanks Doug, I didn't think it would take too long for you to find this. Yeah, I fell in love with that "Jamaica Burst" paint job when I saw the pictures. Can hardly wait for her to arrive.
