Rob Allen Custom 32" scale fretted Deep 4

Sign in to disble this ad
Here is a one-of-a-kind Rob Allen Custom bass. Deep 4 body with a stunning Koa top. Mahogany body and neck, 32" scale. The fretboard , pickup surround , bridge, and internal tone block are Brazilian Rosewood. This bass has a single magnetic pickup, no piezo, and no tone or volume controls. The pickup, which I believe is from a late 1960s or early 1970s Ovation Typhoon bass, is wired directly to the output jack.

I am not the original owner. Unfortunately the previous owner (or one of the previous owners - I don't know the full history of ownership) did not take the extra care that a beautiful instrument like this deserves. There are numerous dings on the bass - a couple on the neck that are through the finish into the wood, and many tiny dings along the bottom of the body (face and back) and at the top of the headstock. There is a pretty good sized ding on the upper bout as well. Why would someone spend $5k on a bass and not be more careful with it? Anyway, as you can see from the photos it is still a stunningly beautiful instrument, is made with typical Rob Allen craftsmanship, and has a unique voice with the chambered body and vintage mag pickup.

Links to the website of the dealer who sold me the bass with additional photos, and some photos of my own follow.

Price is $1,950 including gig bag shipped in the US of A.

How's the balance sitting/standing? Very interesting bass.
Much trouble to post a sound clip or two?

Sitting, if you take your arm off the body the neck wants to dive a bit, but in natural playing position with your right arm resting on the body, it seems well balanced. Standing it is perfectly balanced strapped on.

I'll work on getting some sound clips posted.

i recall when this bass got delivered (i think it was commissioned by a TB'er).

True exotic. Not many RA's with this kind of finish.

...it's traveled a bit. Very nice.

Sound Clips

Please ignore the sloppy playing. Here are a couple of raw sound clips of the bass:

Yes, Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats. I tried a set of DR Black Beauties but didn't care for them on this bass.
