Rob Allen Mouse - fretted with magnetic pickups!

Rob Allen fretted Mouse with passive magnetic pickups - sold, pending payment.

Fretted Mouse basses are not too plentiful, but the ones with magnetic pickups are downright scarce. All original, there are no mods.

First, the bad: there's an appreciable amount of playing wear on the front of the body as shown in the pics. Yep, it goes down to the wood.

Now, the good: other than the wear on the top, the rest of the bass is a 9 out of 10, very clean condition. Plays great, lots of nice variations between the two pickups. Two knobs, one is volume, the other is balance. Simplicity!

Supplied with a basic gig bag. Price is firm, no trades.

Here's a direct link to eleven pics:

Wish I hadn't seen this. I have the "standard" mouse and love it. Just for fun (and I assume others would be curious too) - how old is bass? are you original owner? how would you describe tone/range of sounds (esp. compared to a fretless mouse, if you know)? what happened to the top? do you know what Rob would charge to re-finish the top (or would a new top have to be put on)? are the frets/fretboard a 9/10? I'll keep the dream alive, but good luck regardless. DM

Does this have the piezo pick up in it as well?

...interested, but yeah, I'm also wondering what a complete top refinish might cost...

Thanks for the question, guys. There are two magnetic pickups; there is no piezo. The frets/fretboard are in great shape, playability is typical top-notch Rob Allen.

The serial number is 374 and (other than the frets) it feels identical to my fretless Mouse, serial number 549. This bass was listed for sale on TB just under two years ago, here is the thread:
Rob Allen Mouse FM

I'd describe the tones as being more mid-centered than the piezo on the standard Mouse. Those who have played a standard piezo-equipped Mouse know they have a very big, almost huge bottom.

I don't know what it'd cost to refinish the top, it probably wouldn't be cheap. At $1295, it's priced for someone looking for a bargain on an extremely rare bird, I mean Mouse!

The frets on my Big Muddy mandolin are smaller (less wide) than what this Mouse has. Not by a large degree, but there's a difference.

And it's got roundwounds on it now, don't know which ones, they've got plenty of life in them.

These basses are much loved and admired for their sound. The price seems very fair to me. I already have a Mouse, but if I was in the market I would snap this one up even if it shows some wear. I'll bet it plays great!
