FS/FT: Russ Laggan 32" 5 string fretless "connected horn" bass

Sign in to disble this ad
$2,000 shipped CONUS

Will consider trades for amps/cabs plus cash - no basses. Markbass, TC Electronics, Euphonic Audio and the like.

OK, I have too many basses and it's time to "thin the herd." This is a short scale bass that Russ Laggan built for me and as it's getting the least amount of use, it's the one I've decided to sell. I received this bass from Russ in March 2011 and the bass has seen so little use that it's in as-delivered condition. It's spotless. The specs are:
  • Fretless, unlined, side dot markers
  • 32" scale
  • Hipshot tuners
  • Hipshot monorails (through the body)
  • 17mm spacing
  • Laminate through the body neck of maple and paduk
  • Single truss rod accessible at the headstock
  • Body top is big leaf maple burl
  • Body core is iroko
  • Back back is quilted maple
  • Fingerboard is vera wood (1/2 step short of 3 octaves)
  • Nut is bone
  • Bartonlini pickups
  • Passive electronics in copper lines cavity
  • Volume, blend, treble cut
  • Straplocks
  • Satin finish
  • Weight is less than 9 pounds
  • Will ship with gig bag

The neck is a little on the thick side, but still very comfortable to play. I think the thickness helps with the stability as the B-string is as tight if not tighter its 35" brothers.

The tuners are set high in the headstock and with the through-the-body monorails, you can use long scale strings which is nice as there's more options then having to shop for short scale strings.

I have two sets of photos. These are from Russ of the build process:

These are from me and were taken from an iPhone so not of the best of quality:

Thanks Mark.

I forgot to post this one. It's Russ' signature in the electronics cavity and you can see that this is bass #38:

Edited to add that it's 17mm spacing. Sorry for forgetting that when I posted it originally.

Updated to say that I'm game for trades as long as it's not another bass. Amps/cabs plus cash. Markbass, TC Electronics, Euphonic Audio, G&K MBs, and the like.

Is the B string supposed to be strung that way? Or does it fit if it is strung through the inside?

Strung clockwise? That's so it doesn't run against the e-string. In the top picture Russ had it on the inside originally, but I liked the aesthetics of it on the outside better. I don't think it really matters, just personal taste.

I'm open to offers. I've also sold another one of my basses and would be interested in a trade for 5 string fretted. Prefer 35" scale and neck through.

I guess I'll ask the inevitable question. How's the 32" B string?

The combination of the neck and the through body monorails seem to make the tension about on par with my 35" scale bass also from Russ. It's definitely not floppy and much tighter than the B on my 35" Moses. I don't understand the physics behind it. I've tried Rotosound roundwounds and flatwounds on it and tension seems the same. It's currently strung with flats.

The bridge location is so that you have more positions up the neck. At the very edge of the fingerboard you can just squeeze in a full 3 octaves per string. Sure it's like playing a cello up there, but if you've got the fingers it gives you a fantastic amount travel on the neck.

Hunh. I hadn't noticed that before. Are you saying that, if this were a fretted instrument, it would have 36 frets?

EDIT: Okay, I see. You mentioned that in the first post: Fingerboard is vera wood (1/2 step short of 3 octaves).

@Mark, yes the fingerboard supports a freakish number of positions. If you're right on the edge, you can squeeze off 3 octaves. I'll try and get some recordings done with this bass sometime in the next couple of weeks.
