An awesome dude, so someone will buy safely here.
I have seen some tortoise pickguards on lake placid blue jazz basses, but I have no idea whether those are aftermarket upgrades or not. I guess white pickguards were more common with the lake placid finishes.
We can only speculate why people would refinish a bass... But I guess we need to keep in mind that this is a player's instrument, and as such, the modifications were done to keep the instrument in the best shape possible. Plus... in 1972, a '66 Jazz wasn't that much of a commodity as it is today of course. I remember considering a 69 Jazz when I started out in 1984... but I went with a 81/82 P bass instead... vintage is something that happened later
Thinking of Jaco's Bass of Doom... there's hardly any other bass that deserves the name "Player's instrument" in the world... and it's not exactly pristine and unmodified either.
It's even got laminate top and back to keep the body pieces together. So...
I'm wandering off derailing here.
Just thought I should bump for Tom!
