I put flats on it for thick ol' school tone with great success. The rounds that came with it sounded huge with massive growl, so I'll put those back on for modern rock.
I own several high end basses, but these models really deliver unique usable tones in a well-built package.
My first semi-hollow bass and it will be utilized, since I also play a good bit of Americana and folk rock.

On it's most "acoustic" setting (50 ohms) on the Vari-Tone with the Tone rolled back you get an extremely woody tone that's very representative of it's semi-hollowbody... ness (and I'm using very bright Steels just as Jack does!... need to try some foam right in front of the bridge to further the "Upright Sound"), and at the other end of the spectrum (500 ohms, Tone up full) it's a nice & smooth electric sound that's close to a P-Bass but with a bit more of the Mids of a J-Bass. Not nearly the "Speciality Bass" that you'd think it was!!
...however, I'd also recommend that wether it comes with one or not a case should be purchased for it (it's semi-hollow delicate nature calls for it) as well as springing for a wide strap with a grippy "bottom" like Suede or Neoprene with StrapLoks installed to combat the Neck Dive... I'll soon be putting Hipshot Ultralite Tuners as well as their SuperBridge 3-point bridge upgrade on mine for those! |

Great suggestions - I may upgrade those tuners as well, try another strap and the foam mute. |

Don't know if they are still made in Korea though? |

"100% set up and inspected in the USA by #28"
IMHO, theses days Indonesia, Korea, or China doesnt matter, its whether the instrument is quality made
