I'm shipping two basses out tomorrow morning, and both of them are going into a good double ply box. Not a guitar box. I can't find a box like that for almost 200 miles, and I'm not buying Uline boxes. "yet" I'm taking the necks off.
Now, I'm wide open for any thoughts on that. I've done it before, had no problems, and it is much cheaper.
Anyone have any good tips to add?

So beware.
I buy the same sized box in town at Elderly for $10. I have never paid more than $25 to ship a bass using UPS, and fedex is substantially cheaper. I get killed on peanuts though. $7 for a small bag, which is like.. a 20 gallon trash bag 2/3 full. U-line if anything looks to be a GREAT source for those. 20 cubic feet for $25. Nice price, thats enough to ship a few basses.

Try Wal-Mart... they're everywhere...plenty of boxes to choose from.

GREAT IDEA!!!

As far as claims...I've only had one...UPS crushed an acoustic guitar. They said it was due to improper packing. However, I explained that it had a large gash (the size of a forklift jack edge). When I told them that...they were willing to pay to have it fixed, but not to replace. I had to prove that it couldn't be fixed...then they paid.

A friend had a Music Store...UPS destroyed an amp cab...said it was due to improper packing...never paid out.

Now I only use FedEx ground...a bit cheaper, Saturday delivery (FedEx Home), but the drivers are a bit more careless.

I will usually find a big box and cut it to fit. I will sometimes use wood on the corners for support as well. I pack really well.
