Hi.
I sell a Tobias Basic 5 Pre Gibson #1525 (you can mail Mike Tobias for confirmation)
neck wood : maple/rosewood 5 pieces.
fretboard : rosewood.
Pickups: Tobias (Bartolini).
Electronics : Tobias (Vol/Vol/3 band eq + switch A/P).
body wings : light birdeye maple.
With the original case.
the bass is in very good condition, no scratch.
the sound : naturally very warm and round, the same level all over the neck, perfect for soul and gospell or latin jazz. with the stompbox (i use au Tubefactor for boost/light overdrive), great sound in rock, metal...

They're talking about production switch-over which came later (as basspro557 is referring to). All people really care about is whether it was built by Mike and his original crew or not.
Given that, this is very definitely a "pre-Gibson" Tobias (and a beautiful piece, as well).

Of course there's no "official" convention on this, but it's generally understood at least.
The thing is, there's not much difference in valuation between "early" and "pre-Gibson" Tobias basses, but there's a pretty large valuation difference between "pre" and "post-Gibson" Tobias basses.
That's what it all really boils down to... again... who built it. That's the bottom line. Just like Greg said. |
