Turner Renaissance 5 string

OK, I just got this awhile back from ElMon.
Its a Turner Renaissance 5 string fretless unlined
Rick Turner Renaissance Fretless 5-string
For Sale: Rick Turner Ren5
It's been listed and sold 2 times on TB. It's in very good shape.
All controls work properly, the electronics seem perfect, no noise or intermittent issues.

I have made a couple of significant upgrades..I purchased a brand new hard shell case and strap dingus from Turner guitars and bought 2 new sets of strings...a brand new set of Acousticores and a brand new set of LaBella tapewounds, extra long. These are both currently unopened and in the case along with an old set of acousticores. the Acousticores that are on the bass are not brand new, but they are not anywhere near the end of their playing life.
Mike Lull just completed a setup on this bass, neck relief adjustment, a bit of cosmetic repair to a couple of dings in the fingerboard, and some work on the bridge saddle.
It plays like butter, and has an incredible tonal range. A VERY Dynamic instrument.

However, that being said, I am simply NOT a 5 string guy. it's just too much of a stretch from my classical guitar and 25 years of messing with 4 string basses.
So, I would like to trade this lovely Rick turner Renaissance 5 string fretless unlined. I would consider the following trades:
Rob Allen Mouse Fretless
Veilette Minotaur
Cortobass fretless
Hofner fretless
other quality short scale bass

I would be willing to sell for cash @ $1650 including shipping to you (continental US)...that includes the bass, 4 sets of strings (2 unopened: one acousticore, one LaBella tapewound), the strap dingus, and the brand new Turner hardshell case (form fitting) and a fresh setup by Mike Lull!!

tone monster

this bass is a tone monster. It sounds amazing thru both my Ampeg fliptop and my AI Clarus-EA wizzy 10.
I am strongly considering having a full setup done by Turner and giving it a serious go. It just sounds so good

Sale?

I'll be getting it back from Mike Lull in a couple weeks with a full setup, neck relief, nut and bridge.
I may decide that I like it so well I just keep it...It will be interesting to see, the tone it produces is amazing. What I'd REALLY like to do is trade it for either a Rob Allen MB2 or a Renaissance 4 string!
have a great weekend

I own one and love it. Bump for one of the cooler and more original sounding and looking basses. I've never played anything that was so responsive to different techniques. Moving your plucking hand an inch one way or the other gives you a whole new sound.

What's the difference feel-wise between the labella's and the acousticores? I never got used to the acousticores, went to chromes, which are great sounding but too stiff. What's a nice happy medium? Labella's or Jazz Flat's?

labellas

I haven't tried the labellas on my ren. currently Mike Lull has it and is doing a little setup/touchup/adjustment to maximize the playability.
I know that the Ren was designed with the TI Acousticore string specifically in mind. The tension difference between the TI acousticores and the LaBella Tapewounds might be signficant.
I absolutely love the feel of the LaBella's on my other bass, and I may break down and put them on my ren..especially if I decide to keep the 5 string...I'll have to see how well I adjust to the 5 string over time..never had one before, and so far I don't give 2 hoots for that low B string

I have two ren 5 fretless that I cut down to 34"

EADGC on both basses.

Acouticores on one.
LaBella black nylons on the other.

The LaBellas work/sound great.

Two very distinct sounds. Gives me great tonal range.

Thanks for the replies guys. Would you say the Labellas have more tension? The acousticores are a little to much like rubber bands for my tastes.

And the for sale section of this board is crazy. These threads get buried three pages down in one night.

move thread?

Maybe we should move this thread or start another discussing just issues relevant to turner Renaissance basses?
I am not sure I am going to sell/trade my ren5, and if I do it will be to finance a ren4 fretless.
I would love to have a comprehensive thread to address questions about these unique, unusual, and remarkable instruments.

If yer gonna hang on to that 5-er then yeah. If not, keep the conversation here and get yer free bumps!

Kidding, mostly. There's been a couple threads on the ren around, just did a quick search and it seems the number is low, no 'club' or anything. There is some crazy guy that took a hacksaw a circumsized a pair of 1k+ Rens, unbelievable. Don't invite him. Other than that not too much discussion.

crazy guy

Actually that "crazy guy" is Jibreel..just look up a couple posts!
he did a very professional job of it. It's documented elsewhere on TB. He lives not far from me, and while I admit he is far more daring than I with a saw, he apparently did a very professional job and is quite happy with his 2 Turner Ren 5s with 34" scale!!!

a separate question here...somewhere I have come under the impression that the fingerboards on Turner Rens are made of a laminate of rosewood...anybody know if this is true?
