A very original 1973 Olympic White (now Banana Cream) Fender P Bass for sale

Sign in to disble this ad
I should be able to post here now that I have subcribed as a supporting member. I will begin to post pictures if there is interest. Otherwise I may go the ebay route or possibly Mygear (which I just saw advertised here on TB).

Anyway, I have a 1973 Fender P Bass that is very close to being 100% original. Here are the details, and pics will follow if you folks get an itch for Vintage P Bass.

This is a 1973 Olympic White P Bass which has turned that Banana Cream Color. Serial Number on Neck Plate: 412xxx (placing it squarely in the 73 range but other checks are needed due to neckplates were binned and grabbed for production in a non sequential method). Here are those other checks indicating authenticity....

8 Digit Neck Code is still evident, many have worn off over the years (about half between 1967 and 1980, according to Online Vintage guitar Info website). The neck stamp is photographed and is 01032433.
Which translates to Tuesday June 12th 1973. The neck has very little wear and will not need anything.

The pickups have code 22-28-73, making them an August 1973 entitiy. (also photographed for provenance).

Machine Heads (Tuning Heads), are all original and work like new. These things remind me of quality, heavy duty gears found in industrial grade equipment, yet with a vintage patina.

I think without the shadow of a doubt we can say this is 1973 Fender P Bass in an original state based on those findings.

The pickguard is Tortoise and I can not confirm if its original. There were Tort guards floating round the Fender camp during those times.... but I don't know. Also the volume and tone knobs are brass. Fender was pushing brass parts in the early 70s, but I have no way of knowing if they are original. These are certainly period knobs if nothing else. The Pots are Dimarzio, and are old based on the fact that this was the only part that needed cleaning. No scratchyness in the Pots now once they were cleaned.

The bass plays great. Its almost certainly an Alder Body. It weighs 8 pounds 6 oz. which seems to be a very good weight for most folks looking for lighter basses. The condition is not 'road worn' - more closer to a 'closet classic' but somewhere in between 'road worn' and 'closet classic'. Neck is fine and frets which are all original are ready to roll. Excellent fender P Bass tone. Comes with the original hard case, case is dam near perfect for all those years. No bad latches at all, and just awesome condition for a case.

History: Bass was gigged mostly at local friendly family hoe-downs in rural Virginia. Never taken on the hard road. 2 owners.

My luthier has told me that he has seen excellent quality and value in early 70s Fenders up through early 1974 and found most negative issues with the 75/76 Fender instruments (I guess the CBS effect was setting in). But it got better after 76 he says. I have no idea, but the guy is a guitar encyclopedia.

Packing will be left to shipping pros (which I will get info for if folks have interest), and that could be a little pricey maybe $125, but it will guarantee absolute perfect handling and delivery. Something both of us want.

I Want $1875 for this Bass.

Mainly this is most likely going to be a cash sale.
I will hear out trades, but honestly in this price or trade range I can't think of much right now. Trade is possible still... I'd be mostly open to Fretless Basses or Possibly Bass or Guitar Amps. Gotta Jaco Fender Custom shop you may want to unload? HeHa.

I used to.

I'll think about it and get back to you later with some appropriate trade bait.

Just FYI, I will include a new set of Ernie Ball strings still new in pack and a brand new Korg tuner (also new in box). I know.. no big deal, just a better reason to give the post a bump.

Can you explain the blurriness/smudges on the upper part of the skunk stripe?

EDIT: I'm not making any accusations. Just caught my eye.

What a beauty!!!! If still available, I have a Jaco signature fretless, not CS relic (I'm the original owner) for possible trade bait...?? Either way, that is some nice old yellow P action
